Golden Wolves Sweep Rutgers-Camden Tri-Match

Camden, N.J. (September 8, 2024) - Alvernia University (5-2) did not drop a set all day as they took down both Rutgers-Camden (1-5) and Penn State Brandywine (1-3) 3-0, in a non-conference women's volleyball tri-match Sunday afternoon at Rutgers-Camden. 

The Golden Wolves took down PSU Brandywine in straight sets to start their day with a 25-12 first set and then took sets two and three by scores of 25-23 and 25-21. Alvernia then took on hosts Rutgers-Camden and also recorded a 3-0 sweep with a 25-14, 25-21, 25-17 victory over the Scarlet Raptors. 

Match 1: PSU Brandywine: 0, Alvernia: 3

How it Happened 
  • Alvernia got out to an early 4-2 lead in the first set but the Lions responded with three straight points to grab the 5-4 lead. 
  • The Golden Wolves then ripped off a 15-1 scoring run to swing the lead drastically in their favor, 19-6. Jamie Pierce tallied four service aces during the scoring run, Allison Wolf hammered home three kills and Lindsay Ferguson also tallied a kill. 
  • The Lions halted the Alvernia scoring run with four of the next five points but the Golden Wolves closed the set out on a 5-2 run thanks to Hailey McDevitt, who had two kills and a Patricia Falar ace to seal the 25-12 victory in the first set. 
  • Alvernia started the second set out like the first, taking an early 6-3 lead but errors by the Golden Wolves and kills from the Lions saw PSU Brandywine tying the set at eight.
  • Both teams would trade points back and forth before the Golden Wolves scored four straight points to take a 17-13 lead. 
  • Alvernia's lead did not last long, the Lions responded with four points of their own to tie the set at 17. 
  • A McDevitt kill sparked an 8-6 run to close out the second set and secure the 25-23 victory in the set and extend the lead in the match to 2-0. McDevitt, Kayleigh Kehler and Wolf all recorded kills at the end of the second set to lead the Golden Wolves. 
  • PSU Brandywine was the team that took an early lead in the third set, grabbing a 5-3 lead before the Golden Wolves battled back to tie the game at eight. 
  • Three straight errors from the Golden Wolves gave the Lions an 11-8 lead but Alvernia bounced back with a 7-2 scoring run to take a 15-13 lead. Pierce added two more aces, McDevitt added another and Julianna McGlone tallied two kills. 
  • Alvernia and Brandywine battled back and forth to tie the game at 20 toward the end of the third set. Alvernia ripped off five of the final six points to grab the 25-21 victory in the third set and secure the 3-0 sweep of the Lions. 

Inside the Box Score 
  • Hailey McDevitt led the Golden Wolves in the first match of the day and was in the top three in kills, aces, blocks, assists and digs for the Golden Wolves. McDevitt recorded seven kills, one ace, three blocks, eight assists and seven digs. 
  • Jamie Pierce recorded a  match high seven service aces and also recorded a team high four blocks. 
  • Patricia Falar tallied 11 assists and also three aces and Allison Wolf hammered home six kills and recorded four blocks. 

Match 2: Alvernia: 3, Rutgers-Camden: 0 

How it Happened 
  • The Scarlet Raptors and the Golden Wolves traded points back and forth early in the opening set of the second match with the set tied at seven. Alvernia then ripped off a 7-2 run to force a Rutgers-Camden timeout and take a 15-9 lead. Ferguson and McDevitt both tallied kills for Alvernia during the stretch. 
  • The Golden Wolves then ended the set on a 10-5 scoring run to take the first set 25-14. McDevitt continued to hammer kills down, recording four kills during the run and McGlone tallied two kills during the stretch.
  • Rutgers-Camden got out to the early lead in the second set, scoring five of the first six points to make it 5-1. 
  • McGlone led an Alvernia scoring run with three kills in a 10-4 run for the Golden Wolves to take the 11-9 lead. 
  • The Scarlet Raptors regained the lead, 15-14 before Alvernia popped off on another scoring stretch to end the second set. The Golden Wolves recorded an 11-6 run at the end of the second set to secure the 25-21 victory. McDevitt put down three kills, McGlone followed with two and Falar added another for Alvernia. 
  • Alvernia came out flying in the third set and jumped out to a 13-4 lead thanks to two kills from both McGlone and Pierce and another by Abigail McGinley
  • Rutgers-Camden did not go away and ripped off an 8-1 scoring run to cut the Alvernia lead to just one, 14-13 
  • A Kayleigh Kehler kill sparked an 11-4 stretch for the Golden Wolves to close out the third set. Kehler recorded three kills during the run and McGlone added four as the Golden Wolves secured the 25-17 victory in the third set and a 3-0 sweep of the SCarlet Raptors. 

Inside the Box Score
  • Julianna McGlone hammered home a team high 13 kills on 30 total attacks and committed just one error. McGlone also added four digs, one assist and three block assists. 
  • Hailey McDevitt recorded nine kills, 13 assists and a team high nine digs. 
  • Patricia Falar recorded a team high 15 assists, three aces and eight digs.
