Wilkes Blanks Alvernia, 3-0

Wilkes, PA (Sept. 7, 2024) - Wilkes University (1-1-1) scored two first half goals en route to a 3-0 shutout win over Alvernia University (2-1) on Saturday afternoon in non-conference women's soccer action at Wilkes.

The win marked the first of the year for the Colonels, and it was Alvernia's first loss of the season.

How it Happened
  • Alvernia had the first look on goal of the afternoon as Haley Dougherty fired a shot in late in the fourth minute, but the shot was saved to keep the game at 0-0 early.
  • Late in the seventh minute, the Colones broke through on a put back goal by Wilkes' Sarah Eliff off her own rebound on an initial save by Brynn Bock to give the Colonels the 1-0 lead.
  • Alvernia was held to just two shots over the next 18 minutes, neither of which were on goal, as Wilkes maintained its 1-0 lead.
  • Wilkes then made it a 2-0 game on a goal off a corner kick from Jess Shea.
  • Alvernia was held without a shot on goal the remainder of the half as Wilkes took its 2-0 lead into the break.
  • Alvernia outshot the Colonels through the first 30 minutes of the second half, with Tayler Flaherty putting one shot on net that was saved by Wilkes. But, it was the Colonels who found the back of the net once again as Eliff netted her second of the afternoon to give Wilkes the 3-0 lead with eight minutes to play.
  • Alverina had one more look on goal to try to avoid the shutout as Flaherty fired another shot in, but it was once again saved as Wilkes walked away with the 3-0 shutout win.
