Alvernia Takes Down Albright, 79-61

Reading, Pa (January 11, 2025) - Elijah Hamilton led Alvernia University (9-4, 1-1) to a 79-61 victory over Albright College (6-6, 1-1) Saturday afternoon in a MAC Commonwealth men's basketball matchup at Albright's Bollman Center.

The Golden Wolves were down 33-30 at the halftime break but came back and outscored the Lions 49-28 in the second half to secure the 18 point victory over their crosstown rivals.

How it Happened
  • The Golden Wolves jumped out to an early 14-3 lead over the Lions in the first six minutes after Jacob Stoudt knocked down two threes, Elijah Hamilton added six points and Robert Cottrell added two during the stretch.
  • The Lions then responded with a scoring run of their own, a 14-5 stretch that cut the Alvernia lead to just two, 19-17 with under ten to play in the first half.
  • A driving layup by Hamilton and a layup and three pointer from Janye Stanley halted the Lions run and pushed the Alvernia lead back to nine, 26-17 with six to play.
  • Albright answered with two layups to cut it to a five point deficit before tying the ballgame at 28 with 1:30 to play in the first half.
  • A Robert Mullan driving layup stopped the Albright run momentarily but the Lions knocked down their sixth three pointer of the first half and tallied a layup with two seconds to go to swing the lead in Albright's favor for the first time all game, 33-30 heading into the halftime break.
  • The Golden Wolves shot 31% from the floor and 33% from three point range. Alvernia's Jacob Stoudt led all scorers with 11 points in the first half including three from beyond the arc.
  • Alvernia is out rebounding the Lions 28-20 but Albright has forced seven Alvernia turnovers and have turned the ball over just three times.
  • The Lions started the second half with a three pointer from Eric Chamberlain to make it 36-30 Albright but a Jakob Kelly driving layup and a Hamilton and one cut the Albright lead to one, 36-35.
  • Mullan then knocked down two free throws to tie the ballgame at 37 with 17 minutes to go in the second half.
  • Albright then answered with a 7-2 run and regained the five point, 44-39 lead over the Golden Wolves.
  • Alvernia bounced back after Hamilton knocked down a pull up jumper from the elbow and then Cottrell knocked down a corner three to tie the game back up at 44 with under 15 to go.
  • The Lions tallied a two point jumper to take a two point, 46-44 lead before the Lions called a timeout. Alvernia then came out of the timeout and grabbed the lead back after Hamilton found Stoudt who hit his fourth three of the ball game to make it 47-46 Golden Wolves.
  • Alvernia pushed the lead to six after a driving layup by Mullan, two free throws from Stoudt and Hamilton as the Golden Wolves called a timeout with a 54-48 lead with nine minutes to go.
  • The Golden Wolves rattled off seven straight points out of the timeout thanks to two driving layups from Cottrell and a big time step back three from Mullan to give Alvernia the 13 point, 61-48 lead, with seven minutes to go.
  • Alvernia continued to maintain its lead over the next three minutes as they held a 13 point, 65-53 lead over the Lions with under four minutes to go in the second half.
