Big Second Half Lifts Pride Past Golden Wolves, 79-67

Chester, Pa (January 18, 2025) - Widener University (5-10, 3-1) used a big second half to power the Pride to a 79-67 victory over Alvernia University (10-5, 2-2) Saturday afternoon in a MAC Commonwealth men's basketball matchup at Widener. 

The Golden Wolves led by one, 33-32 at the half but the Pride outscored the Golden Wolves 47-34 in the second half to secure the victory. 

How it Happened 
  • The Pride jumped out to an early 10-6 lead in the first five minutes after a three ball pushed the lead to four but a Robert Mullan diving layup sparked a 10-3 Golden Wolves run that swung the lead in their favor, 16-13 with under 12 to go in the half. Robert Cottrell and Kareem Diaz both knocked down threes for Alvernia during the stretch. 
  • Alvernia and Widener traded buckets back and forth with the Golden Wolves holding a four point, 26-22 lead over the Pride with five minutes to go in the half. Elijah Hamilton tallied six of Alvernia's last ten and Jakob Kelly added the other four. 
  • The Pride ended the first half on a 10-7 scoring run that cut the Alvernia lead to one, 33-32 heading into the halftime break. 
  • The Golden Wolves shot 44% from the floor in the first half but shot 2-13 from beyond the arc while Widener shot 4-9. 
  • Widener came out flying in the second half and ripped off a 21-6 scoring run in the first five minutes of the second half to flip the lead in its favor, 53-39. 
  • The Pride continued to hold their lead over the next ten minutes with a 16-13 run as Widener held an 11 point, 66-55 lead over the Golden Wolves. 
  • The Golden Wolves responded with six straight points to cut the Widener lead to five, 66-61 but the Pride ended the game on a 13-6 run that sealed the 12 point, 79-67 victory over the Golden Wolves. 

Inside the Box Score
  • Elijah Hamilton led the way with 22 points and eight rebounds for the Golden Wolves. Hamilton shot 9-13 from the floor and dished out an assist. 
  • Jakob Kelly followed with 14 points and six rebounds with two threes and four assists. 
  • Robert Cottrell was the final Golden Wolf in double figures with ten and also added four assists. 
  • Robert Mullan led Alvernia with six assists and four steals and turned the ball over just once.
