Strong Start Lifts Alvernia Past Stevenson, 68-52

Reading, Pa. (Jan. 25, 2025) - Alvernia University (12-5, 4-2) jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as the Golden Wolves defeated Stevenson University (6-11, 0-6), 68-52, on Saturday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth Men's Basketball action at Alvernia's Jack McCloskey Court. 

Alvernia took a 7-0 lead through the first three minutes and built its lead up to 15, 21-6, midway through the first. Stevenson threatened to close the gap in the latter minutes of the first half, but Alvernia pulled back away and led 29-15 at the half. The Golden Wolves never let the Mustangs back in in the second half, building their lead to as much as 27. Stevenson rattled off a quick 13 points in the final two and half minutes, but Alvernia secured the 68-52 win.  

How it Happened
  • Elijah Hamilton opened the game for Alvernia with a layup a minute into the action, and Alvernia quickly built its lead up to 7-0 with another Hamilton layup and a Jacob Stoudt three. 
  • The Mustangs got their first points on layup with 15:46 to play, but Stevenson continued to struggle to get a basket to fall and Alvernia took advantage. The Golden Wolves built their lead up to 15, 21-6, as the half surpassed its midpoint. But, Alvernia's scoring went cold as the Mustangs began to heat up. 
  • Stevenson went on a quick 9-0 run to cut Alvernia's lead down to six, 21-15, with five minutes to play as Alvernia went cold for five minutes.
  • The Golden Wolves got back on track and closed out the half on an 8-0 run of its own to take a 29-15 lead into the half. 
  • Hamilton opened the second half for Alvernia with an opening possession layup, and a pair of made free throws by Jakob Kelly made it an 18 point game, 33-15, just a minute into the second half.
  • Alvernia kept it rolling from there. The Golden Wolves made it a 20 point game, 41-21, on a Robert Mullan layup off a Kelly steal five minutes into the half. Alvernia maintained the 20 point lead midway through the second half as Mullan knocked down a pair of free throws to make it a 49-29 game. A Rasheem Dearry just under a minute later gave Alvernia a 22 point lead with 9:43 to play.
  • Alvernia built its lead all the way up to 27, 66-39, on a Dearry layup with 2:47 to play. 
  • The Mustangs got some points back late, but Alvernia came away with the 68-52 win.

Inside the Box Score
  • Alvernia shot 20-for-21 from the foul line, marking its best free throw shooting of the season.
  • Rasheem Dearry led Alvernia with 16 points across 22 minutes of action. Elijah Hamilton finished with a 14 point, 14 rebound double-double.
