Explosive Second Quarter Powers Alvernia Past Eastern, 6-1

Reading, Pa. (Oct. 15, 2025) - Alvernia Field Hockey (6-8, 1-1) used a three-goal second quarter to power past Eastern University (7-6, 0-2), 6-1, on Wednesday night in MAC Commonwealth Field Hockey action at Alvernia.

The Golden Wolves led 1-0 through the first 15 minutes, but a goal from Ava Michael and a pair of goals from Kelsy McClintock broke things open for Alvernia and gave the Golden Wolves a 4-0 lead going into the half. Caroline Martin then scored a pair of second half goals to make it a 6-0 game. Alvernia was poised for the 6-0 shutout win, but Eastern spoiled the bid with a goal with 25 seconds remaining in regulation for the 6-1 final.

How it Happened
  • Alvernia took the 1-0 lead on a put back goal by Ava Michael in the 10th minute. Michael collected her own rebound and fired it past the Eastern goalie to give Alvernia the 1-0 lead.
  • Michael then netted her second of the night just under four minutes into the second quarter. After a defensive save by the Eagles, Michael again found her own rebound and sent the ball in for the 2-0 lead.
  • Seven minutes later, Kelsy McClintock got on the score sheet for the Golden Wolves. McClintock picked up a pass down the Eastern sideline, dribbled to the circle, and spun around the goal. She then scored on a sweeping backhand shot that got up over the goalie to give Alvernia the 3-0 lead.
  • McClintock then gave Alvernia the 4-0 lead in the final seconds of the quarter. McClintock received up the middle, dodged the goalie and sent one into net from the top of the circle to give Alvernia the 4-0 lead.
  • Martin then took over scoring for Alvernia in the second half. She netted her first of the night four and a half minutes into the third quarter. Matisyn Derkacs sent a pass through the legs of the Eastern goalie, and Martin picked it up and finished if off with an empty look at goal to give Alvernia the 5-0 lead.
  • Martin then made it a 6-0 game in the final five minutes of action. McClintock sent a pass into the circle, and Martin settled it before spinning around and sending in a shot off the far post to give Alvernia the 6-0 lead.
