Pride Defeat Golden Wolves in Double OT, 3-2

Reading, Pa. (Oct. 22, 2025) - Widener University (8-6, 1-3) scored the game-winner in the 78th minute of double-overtime to defeat Alvernia University (6-10, 1-3) 3-2 on Wednesday night in MAC Commonwealth field hockey action at Widener.

After a scoreless 17 minutes of overtime, the Pride pushed the ball into the Alvernia defensive zone and down along the goal line. Widener hit the ball off the goal line and it deflected off of Widener's Alex Quartapella and into the goal. After discussion amongst the officials, the goal stood and Widener took the 3-2 win.

How it Happened
  • Alvernia got on the board with a put-back goal by Ava Michael in the sixth minute. But, the 1-0 lead didn't last long as Widener evened the game at 1-1 90 seconds later. Widener put another attempt on goal in the 10th minute, but Zoe Caloviras made the save for the Golden Wolves as the game moved into the second quarter locked at 1-1.
  • Both teams went without a look on net for the majority of the second quarter until Michael netted her second of the night off the assist of Alessandra Stevens to give Alvernia the 2-1 with just over a minute and a half to play in the half. Widener sent in an attempt to answer with two seconds remaining in the half, but Caloviras made the save to send the game into the half with Alvernia leading 2-1.
  • The Golden Wolves pressured in the opening minutes of the third quarter with Michael sending in two more shots on goal. But, both attempts were saved as Alvernia held onto the one goal lead. Alvernia did not allow a single shot by the Pride in the third quarter.
  • Alvernia's lead lasted just 34 seconds into the fourth quarter as Widener evened the game up at 2-2 with a goal by Karly Bervinchak with 14:26 remaining in regulation.
  • The Pride had an opportunity to take the lead in the 58th minute after being awarded a penalty stroke. But, the shot taker slipped for the Pride and Caloviras was able to make the save to keep it a 2-2 game with just over two minutes remaining in regulation. Neither team got a shot off the rest of the way as the game moved into overtime.
  • Alvernia pressured from the jump of the first overtime, but the Golden Wolves had two shots saved and a third one blocked.
  • Alvernia was then awarded a penalty stroke of its own in the 67th minute. Sarah Schaffer went to the line for Alvernia and fired a shot in, but the Widener keeper made a nice save to keep the game going. Widener had one opportunity late in the first overtime, but it went off the post to send the game into the second overtime period.
  • Both teams went shotless for the first seven minutes of the second overtime until the Pride worked their way into Alvernia's defensive zone. The Pride got cornered on the goal line just off the right post. Widener's Bervinchak pushed the ball off the goal line, and it deflected off of Widener's Alex Quartapella, who was positioned in front of the net. The goal counted for the Pride and secured them the 3-2 win.
