Men's Ice Hockey Downs SUNY Cortland, 3-2

Cortland, NY (Nov. 1, 2025) - Alvernia Men's Ice Hockey (2-0-0) used a three-goal second period to secure a 3-2 win over SUNY Cortland (1-1-0) on Saturday evening in non-conference men's ice hockey action at Cortland's Alumni Arena.

The Red Dragons, who were receiving votes in the first USCHO poll of the year, opened the scoring early in the first period. Alvernia then scored two goals in the first half of the second period to take a 2-1 lead. Cortland then tied it back up at 2-2 with five minutes to play in the second period. Just 30 seconds later, Alvernia broke the tie to retake the 3-2 lead. Alvernia then used a stellar performance by first-year goalie Jeff Kreidler to hang on to the 3-2 win.

How it Happened
  • An early tripping penalty against the Golden Wolves gave the Red Dragons an extra-man opportunity, and they took advantage. A minute and 20 seconds into the power-play, the Red Dragons got on the board with a goal by Thomas Rockey.
  • The game remained at 1-0 through the remainder of the first period as the Red Dragons outshot Alvernia 14-5 on goal in the first frame. Kreidler made 13 saves in net for Alvernia in the opening 20 minutes.
  • Two penalties charged against the Red Dragons gave Alvernia a 5-on-3 power-play opportunity early in the second period. Alvernia tied the game up  at 1-1 as Vincent Servizzi tapped in a rebound off the initial shot of AJ Saadeh. Nolan Kazeil was also credited with an assist on the equalizer.
  • Alvernia then had to kill off a 5v3 power-play for the Red Dragons, and another three saves by Kreidler kept the game tied at 1-1.
  • The Golden Wolves broke the tie just prior to the midpoint of the period as Sawyer Senio redirected a shot from Matthew Henry into goal. Henry, along with Edvin Robertsson, assisted on the goal to give Alvernia the 2-1 lead.
  • Alvernia's lead lasted just under six minutes as Cortland scored on a putback shot to even the game at 2-2.
  • The tie lasted just 29 seconds as Keegan Driscoll scored on a putback goal of his own with four and a half minutes remaining in the second frame. Both Henry and Jack Terhaar assisted on the eventual game-winner.
  • Alvernia killed off a Cortland penalty in the final minute of the second period and into the opening minute of the third. The Red Dragons threatened for the entire third period, but Kreidler and the Alvernia defense held strong. Alvernia killed off one more power-play attempt and Kreidler made another 15 saves to secure Alvernia's 3-2 win over Cortland.
