McLellan Leads Golden Wolves at Annual Tonee Ellis Memorial Tournament

Reading, Pa. (November 1, 2025) - Alvernia University recorded a third place team finish at its annual Tonee Ellis Memorial Tournament Saturday at Alvernia's Tom and Helen Flynn PLEX.

The Golden Wolves finished in third place out of 15 teams with a total team score of 164.5.

Hayden McLellan led the way for the Golden Wolves with a first place finish in the 184 pound bracket. Owen Reber recorded a second place finish in the 285 pound bracket and Rocco Monteferrante posted a third place finish at 125 pounds. Ethan Staples, Jason Chiodi, and Ian Vitalo all recorded fourth place finishes in their respective weight classes.

How it Happened

Hayden McLellan took first in the 184 pound bracket and went a perfect 4-0 on the day. McLellan received a first round bye in before recording a victory by fall in his first bout before ripping off three straight technical falls en route to the 184 pound title. McLellan recorded a 19-4 tech fall in the quarterfinal match then tallied a 18-1 tech fall in the semi before posting a 21-5 tech fall over Albright's Abdoul Akala in the final.
Owen Reber recorded a second place finish in the 285 pound bracket and recorded back to back decisions to book his ticket to the semifinals. Reber then took down Joseph Gasser of Albright, 9-3, in the semifinal bout before dropping the finals match to Simon Taylor from Gettysburg, 7-1.
Rocco Monteferrante finished third in the 125 pound bracket and started his day with back to back pins to advance to the quarterfinals. Monteferrante then recorded a 12-5 decision over Ryan Farley from Alfred State to advance to the semis. Monteferrante dropped the semifinal match before receiving a forfeit in the third place match.
Jason Chiodi finished fourth in the 197 pound bracket and recorded a fall in his first match before recording a 4-1 decision in the quarterfinal to advance to the semifinals. Chiodi then dropped the semifinal match and the third place match to finish in fourth place on the day.
Ian Vitalo also recorded a fourth place finish and did so in the 165 pound bracket. Vitalo recorded a 10-3 decision in his first bout of the day and then followed with a pin in the second round and the quarterfinal match. Vitalo then fell in the semifinal and the third place match to record a fourth place finish in his first collegiate tournament.
Ethan Staples posted a fourth place finish in the 125 pound bracket and started his day with a 6-0 decision and then followed with a pin in 1:04. Staples then advanced to the semifinals after a medical forfeit before falling in the semifinal match by major decision. Staples then had to forfeit the third place match to finish in fourth place.
Luke Thomas finished in fifth place in the 174 pound bracket and his five wins on the day was the most on Alvernia. Thomas started his day with back to back decisions before dropping the quarterfinal bout by major decision. Thomas then bounced back with a fall and two decisions en route to a fifth place finish.
