Golden Wolves Run Past Lions, 92-80

Reading, Pa. (November 10, 2025) - All five Golden Wolves scored in double figures with Robert Cottrell leading the way with 23 as Alvernia University (1-1) took down Penn State Abington (0-2), 92-80, Monday night in a non-conference men's basketball matchup on Alvernia's Jack McCloskey Court. 

The Golden Wolves outscored the Lions by six in both halves of the contest en route to the 12 point victory. Robert Cottrell led the Golden Wolves with 23 points, Elijah Hamilton followed with 21 points and Janye Stanley rounded out the top scorers with 20. 

Alvernia rebounded the Lions 37-23 including a 27-16 advantage on the defensive glass. The Golden Wolves also held a lead for 35 of the 40 minutes of basketball. 

How it Happened 
  • Alvernia got on the board with a driving layup by Elijah Hamilton to open the game, and the two teams traded points from there and the Lions held a slight 9-8 edge with 14:48 remaining.
  • The Lions built it up to an 11-8 lead on their next possession, but the Golden Wolves tied it at 11-11 with a Rasheem Dearry 3-pointer 30 seconds later. Another Dearry 3-pointer on Alvernia's next possession gave the Golden Wolves a 14-11 lead.
  • Alvernia built its lead up to seven, 18-11, on a pair of Mason Jones free throws and a driving layup from Dearry. 
  • The Lions chipped away at Alvernia's narrow lead and got back within one, 22-21, with 9:37 to play on a 3-pointer from Joshua Hunter. But, the Golden Wolves held the Lions to just two points over the next four minutes as Alvernia took a five point lead, 28-23 on a driving layup by Robert Cottrell.
  • The Lions got back within one, 30-29, on a jumper with 3:30 to play and took a 31-30 lead on a layup with 2:38 to play. Alvernia retook the lead, 33-31, on a Janye Stanley 3-pointer  with 2:20 to play before the Lions tied it up at 33-33 with two minutes to play in the half.
  • The score tied once more before the half at 35-35, but Alvernia retook the lead, 37-35, on an Elijah Hamilton layup with 58 seconds to go. Hamilton hit a free throw to give Alvernia the three point lead, and Cottrell hit a buzzer-beating corner three to give Alvernia the 41-35 lead into the half.
  • The Lions opened the second half with a 3-pointer on the opening possession, but back-to-back layups by Alvernia from Jones and Hamilton pushed Alvernia's lead up to seven, 45-38, through the first minute of the half.
  • Five minutes into the half, Alvernia took a double-digit lead, 58-48, on a pull-up jumper from Stanley, and a layup by Stanley on a Cottrell steal on Alvernia's next possession made it a 12-point game, 60-48, with 14:23 to play.
  • A quick pair of 3-pointers by the Lions as the half eclipsed  the midpoint brought the Lions quickly within four, 68-64, with 9:53 to play. After a pair of made free throws by Alvernia, the Lions cut it to a three point game, 70-67, on a 3-pointer with 8:30 to play.
  • Alvernia responded with a driving layup by Stanley that sparked a 9-0 run for Alvernia over the next two minutes, giving the Golden Wolves the 79-67 lead with 5:36 to play. 
  • The Lions answered on the ensuing possession after a JoJo Kelly driving layup to pull within nine, 79-70, but the Golden Wolves responded with seven straight points to push the lead back to double digits, 86-70, with 3:16 to go. 
  • Abington ended the game on a 10-6 scoring run but it was not enough as the Golden Wolves secured the 12 point, 92-80 victory over the Lions. 

Inside the Box Score 
  • Robert Cottrell led the way for the Golden Wolves with a team high 23 points. Cottrell shot 6-11 from the floor, 2-3 from beyond the arc and a perfect 9-9 from the charity stripe. Cottrell also added six boards, dished out five assists and added three steals in all 40 minutes of action. 
  • Elijah Hamilton followed with 21 points for Alvernia on a 9-14 shooting performance from the floor and also added six rebounds. 
  • Janye Stanley rounded out the Golden Wolves with 20 or more points with a 20 point game and also led the team with nine rebounds and added three assists, a steal and a block. 
  • Mason Jones and Rasheem Dearry both scored in double figures for the Golden Wolves with Jones tallying 14 and Dearry added 12 and also had three steals. 
  • The Golden Wolves shot 53.6% from the floor, 46% from beyond the arc and missed just two free throws (26-28) in the win.

  • The Golden Wolves are back in action on Wednesday when they travel down the street to Penn State Berks to take on the Lions at 5:00 PM.
