Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | By Marisa Lombardo (Assistant AD for Athletic Communications)

Penn State Harrisburg Downs Alvernia, 80-76

Reading, Pa. (Nov. 22, 2025) - Alvernia University (3-3) was held scoreless for the final two and a half minutes of the second half as Penn State Harrisburg (2-3) came away with the 80-76 win over the Golden Wolves in Saturday evening in non-conference men's basketball action at Alvernia's Jack McCloskey Court.

After trailing for a majority of the second half, Janye Stanley knocked down a 3-pointer for the Golden Wolves to tie the game at 76-76 with 2:32 to play. But, the Golden Wolves were held scoreless the rest of the way. The Lions broke the tie with a pair of made free throws. They then went on to make a defensive stop on Alvernia and force a Golden Wolves turnover in the final minute before sealing the game with another pair of late free throws.

Nearly a third of Alvernia's points came from the free throw line tonight. The Golden Wolves went 25-for-30, accounting for 25 of their 76 points scored. Robert Cottrell led the way from the line, going 8-for-8.

How it Happened
  • The Lions jumped out to a 5-0 lead early, but the Golden Wolves got things going with a made free throw by Elijah Hamilton followed by a breakaway dunk by the junior to make it a 5-3 game through two minutes.
  • After Alvernia evened the game at 5-5 on a pair of made free throws by Dearry, the Lions went on a 7-0 run over the next two minutes to take a 12-5 lead.
  • A pull-up jumper by Mason Jones got Alvernia going again and sparked an answering 9-0 run that gave Alvernia the 14-12 lead with 12:29 to play.
  • The Golden Wolves and Lions traded the lead from there. There were 14 lead changes and ties through the remainder of the first half. Alvernia took a 32-31 lead with 3:14 to play in the half on a Stanley 3-pointer, and the Golden Wolves held that lead for 3:12 - the longest they held a lead all game - but the Lions hit a pair of free throws with two seconds remaining in the half to take a 40-39 lead into the break.
  • A 3-pointer from Stanley off a Dearry steal gave Alvernia the 42-40 lead coming out of the half, but those three points marked Alvernia's only points through the first four minutes of the second half as Penn State took a 48-42 lead.
  • Penn State held that lead for nearly the entirety of the second half - building it up to as much as 12, 72-60, with 6:34 to play. But, Alvernia closed in and threatened late.
  • A layup from Cottrell of his own steal made it a 72-64 game with 5:28 to play, and that layup ignited a 14-4 run for Alvernia over the next three minutes. The Golden Wolves closed with four, 76-73, on a pair of layups by Cottrell and Hamilton within 21 seconds of each other. Alvernia then tied it up at 76-76 on a 3-pointer by Stanley with 2:32 to play.
  • The game-tying 3-pointer marked Alvernia's final points of the game as the Lions held Alvernia scoreless the rest of the way. Penn State broke the tie on a pair of free throws, and then added some late insurance on another pair of free throws made to secure the 80-76 win.
