Golden Wolves Secure Postseason Appearance with 2-1 Win Over Stevenson

Reisterstown, Md. (Feb. 14, 2025) - Alvernia University (13-8-2, 9-8-2) used two second period goals to secure a 2-1 win over Stevenson University (8-13-1, 6-11-1) on Friday night in MAC women's ice hockey action at the Reisterstown SportsPlex.

The Mustangs got on the board late in the first period to take a 1-0 lead, and held the lead until Alvernia evened the game at 1-1 11 minutes into the second period. Just four minutes later, Alvernia broke the 1-1 tie on a power play goal. The Golden Wolves then held the Mustangs off the rest of the way to take the 2-1 win.

With the win, Alvernia secured a spot in the 2025 MAC postseason and also set a new record for most wins in a season with its 13th of the 2024-25 season. The previous record was 12 wins in a year, set during the 2022-23 season.

How it Happened
  • The Golden Wolves outshot the Mustangs through the first period, but it was the Mustangs who got on the board first. Stevenson's Emma DeMan grabbed the puck off a pass from behind the net and snuck in a shot just inside the near post to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead with three minutes to play in the first period. Stevenson held the 1-0 lead through the remainder of the first period and through the first half of the second period.
  • Alvernia evened up the game at 1-1 with a goal from Riley Hill. Hill settled a pass from Kathryn Palmer and fired a shot in from the front edge of the faceoff circle. The shot rocketed past the left shoulder of Stevenson goalie and into the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1.
  • Alvernia wasted little time breaking the tie. Shortly after Hill's goal, Alvernia was awarded a powerplay off a Stevenson holding penalty. The Golden Wolves sent in three shots that were stopped, but Hill sent in a fourth that was deflected off the chest of the Stevenson goalie and fell to the ice. Moa Lagh quickly tapped the puck in between pads of the goalie and into the goal to give Alvernia the 2-1 lead with four and a half minutes to play in the second.
  • The Golden Wolves pressured the rest of the period, but Stevenson held them off as Alvernia took the 2-1 lead into the final 20 minutes.
  • The Mustangs had opportunities in the early minutes of the period. But, Alvernia's defense, behind goalie Stephanie Skorupa, held the Mustangs off. Alvernia called a timeout nine minutes into the period, and settled from there.
  • The Golden Wolves killed off a penalty with six minutes to play, allowing just two shots during the penalty kill to hold onto the lead.
  • Alvernia closed out the game on a 5v3 opportunity, limiting Stevenson's chances of evening the game. Alvernia did not allow a shot on goal in nearly the final four minutes of action as Alvernia took the 2-1 win.
