Spartans Down Golden Wolves, 70-43

York, Pa. (Feb. 8, 2025) -  York College (14-7, 7-3) jumped out to a 12-2 lead in the first quarter and went on to take a 70-43 win over Alvernia University (11-10, 5-5) on Saturday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth women's basketball action at York College.

The Spartans opened up the game outscoring Alvernia 12-2 in the opening frame. Alvernia trailed by just 12 at the half, 31-19, but the Spartans came out of the half and outscored Alvernia 39-24 the rest of the way as York took the 70-43 win over the Golden Wolves.

How it Happened
  • After a slow start in the opening two minutes of action, York got on the board first with a Morgan Adams layup. Alvernia answered with a layup from Jennah DeGout to make it a 2-2 game, but Alvernia was held scoreless the rest of the quarter as York took a 12-2 lead into the second quarter.
  • The Spartans opened the second quarter with a 3-pointer from Shealyn Ricks, but DeGout hit another jumper to keep Alvernia within 11, 15-4. The Golden Wolves and Spartans matched points for the remainder of the quarter, and Alvernia got within eight on a Ryleigh Poole layup with 2:19 to play. But, the Spartans closed out the half with a jumper from Taylor Brenneman to take a 12 point lead, 31-19, into the half. Olivia Burke finished with 10 of Alvernia's 17 points in the second quarter.
  • After a free throw by Kylie Bradford opened the third quarter scoring and brought Alvernia within 11, 31-20, the Spartans outscored Alvernia 21-5 the remainder of the quarter to take a 52-25 lead into the final ten minutes.
  • The Golden Wolves held the Spartans without a field goal for the first four and a half minutes of the fourth quarter, but Alvernia could only get within 20, 53-33, during the Spartans scoring drought. The Spartans got back on track and cruised the rest of the way to a 70-43 win.
