Golden Wolves Secure Series Sweep of Blazers with Pair of Victories

Frederick, Md. (March 22, 2025) - Alvernia University (10-9, 3-3) took games two and three of the MAC Commonwealth baseball series over Hood College (6-14, 2-4) to secure the series sweep Saturday afternoon at Hood. 

Alvernia took game one of the doubleheader with a 7-1 victory and then turned around and took down the Blazers 10-0 in eight innings of game two thanks to a combined one hitter by Tyler Weil-Kaspar, Ronald Kopcho and Matt Mays to secure the series sweep.

How it Happened 
  • After three scoreless innings the Golden Wolves broke open the scoring in the top of the fourth inning with a two spot. Logan Nelson started things off with an RBI double to center that scored Quincy Esannason and then Jack Zabarsky drove in Nelson with a sacrifice fly to right to put Alvernia up 2-0. 
  • Alvernia tacked on two more in the next inning when Esannason tallied a two RBI single into left field that scored Mike Pulcini and Ryan Kopf and made it a 4-0 Alvernia lead. 
  • The Golden Wolves scored runs for the third straight inning in the top of the sixth with three more insurance runs. RJ Emrich got things going with an RBI single, Alvernia then tallied two more runs via wild pitches and pushed the lead to 7-0. 
  • Alvernia starter Nick Ferraioli dealt through the six innings he threw and tossed six scoreless innings, scattered just four hits, issued three walks and struck out three batters. 
  • Hood grabbed one back in the home half of the seventh inning but that was not enough as the Golden Wolves grabbed the 7-1 victory and secured the series victory over the Blazers.

How it Happened
  • Alvernia and Hood both struggled to score runs in the first four innings of the game and Alvernia starting pitcher Tyler Weil-Kaspar tossed four shutout innings and allowed just one hit. 
  • The Golden Wolves got on the board in the fifth inning when Jake Chapman tallied an RBI single to left that scored Christopher Babkowski to put Alvernia up 1-0. 
  • Alvernia tacked on two more in the sixth inning to push the lead to three after a Joe Glass sacrifice fly plated Evan Thomas and a Mike Pulcini bases loaded fielder's choice scored Jack Zabarsky to make it 3-0. 
  • A Timmy Hitchcock RBI single to left then scored Chapman in the top of the seventh to push the lead to four, 4-0. 
  • The Golden Wolves then broke it open in the top of the eighth with six runs in the inning and made it a 10-0 ballgame. Logan Nelson started things off after working a bases loaded walk and then Quincy Esannason scored via a pass ball to make it 6-0. Thomas followed with a two RBI single to left field and then Glass ripped his own two RBI single into the right center gap to make it a 10-0 game. 
  • Matt Mays came on in the bottom of the eighth inning and shut down the Blazers to preserve the shutout, the combined one hitter and the 10-0 victory.
