Owings Mills, Md. (Apr. 12, 2025) - After Alvernia University (2-11, 0-3) kept the Mustangs close in the first quarter, but Stevenson University (9-5, 3-1) used a six-goal run to open things up en route to a 16-5 win over the Golden Wolves on Saturday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth women's lacrosse action at Stevenson.
Alvernia trailed just 2-1 through 11 minutes of action. But, the Mustangs used a pair of converted free-position goals to spark a 6-0 run that gave Stevenson an 8-1 lead. Sherrin Smith put an end to the Stevenson run, but the Mustangs still took an 8-2 lead into the break. Alvernia held the Mustangs at bay for much of the second half, outsourcing Stevenson 2-1 into the opening minutes of the fourth. But, Stevenson unleashed six more goals to close out the game for the 16-5 win.Â
How it Happened
- Stevenson got off to a quick start, scoring its first goal of the game off the opening draw and making it a 2-0 game three and a half minutes later.
- Alvernia got on the board off an excellent shot that Hailey Miller buried into the low corner of the net off the assist of Hannah Tyler with 5:36 to play in the opening quarter.
- Stevenson made it a two-goal game, 3-1, on a free-position goal with 3:49 to play in the first. The Mustangs made it a 4-1 game with just under two minutes to play on another free-position goal. Stevenson tacked on one more goal in the final seconds of the quarter to take a 5-1 lead into the second.
- The Mustangs kept their scoring run going and made it a 6-1 game just over three and a half minutes into the second quarter. Alvernia slowed the Mustangs down for the next six minutes, but Stevenson broke through once again to make it a 7-1 game with just over five minutes to play in the first half.
- The Golden Wolves put an end to Stevenson's six-goal run with Sherrin Smith splitting multiple defenders and firing in a high shot into the back of the net to get Alvernia back on the and make it an 8-2 game with a minute and a half remaining in the half. But, Stevenson had the last say of the half. The Mustangs picked up a ground ball off an Alvernia turnover, drew a foul with eight seconds to play and converted a free-position opportunity to take a 9-2 lead into the half.
- After nearly six minutes of scoreless action to open the second half, Alvernia scored the first goal of the third quarter. Smith was awarded a free-position and she drove in with her attempt and dumped it over the goalie and down into the back of the net to make it a 9-3 game with 9:14 to play in the third.
- The Golden Wolves held Stevenson scoreless for nearly nine minutes to open the third quarter, but the Mustangs finally broke through on a free position goal with 6:08 to play in the quarter.Â
- Alvernia got back within six with Mia Martin driving in from behind the goal and firing in a shot that got past both a Mustang defender and the Mustang goalie to make it a 10-4 game going into the fourth.
- Stevenson used its fifth free-position goal of the afternoon to open the fourth quarter scoring and take an 11-4 lead a minute into the quarter.Â
- After Stevenson made it a 12-4 game, Alvernia got a goal back with 7:52 to play. Lindsay Kerchner snagged a pass between two defenders from Martin and Kerchner fired past the goalie to make it a 12-5 game. But, Stevenson added right back to its lead about a minute and a half later to make it a 13-5 game with 6:34 to play. Stevenson then added three more the rest of the way for the 16-5 final. Â

- Mia Martin and Sherrin Smith each finished with two points. Martin's came off of a goal and an assist, while Smith's came from two goals.
- Kayleigh Kight and Hannah Wolfe each finished with a team-high three ground balls. Cailyn Hawley finished with a team-high four draw controls.
- Wolfe finished the game with 13 saves in net for Alvernia.Â
