Smith, Tyler Lead Golden Wolves Past Eagles, 16-5

Reading, Pa (April 16, 2025) - Alvernia University (3-11, 1-3) netted 16 goals en route to a 16-5 victory over Eastern University (2-10, 0-5) Wednesday evening in a MAC Commonwealth women's lacrosse matchup at Alvernia. 

Alvernia's Sherrin Smith netted four goals and Hannah Tyler tacked on three to lead the Golden Wolves. Seven other Golden Wolves netted goals for Alvernia and the defense held the Eagles to just five goals. 

How it Happened 
  • Alvernia netted six goals in the first period to grab the early lead in the game. Gracie Brower started things off for the Golden Wolves with an unassisted goal and Sherrin Smith followed with an unassisted goal of her own to make it 2-0 Alvernia with ten minutes to go. 
  • The Golden Wolves then netted two goals in ten seconds after Lindsay Kerchner and Smith scored goals to make it a four goal Alvernia lead. 
  • Smith completed her hat trick with three minutes left in the quarter to make it 5-0 and Sophia Ruocco then found the back of the net after a Brower assist to give the Golden Wolves a 6-0 lead after the first quarter. 
  • Eastern opened the second quarter with a goal in the first minute to cut the Alvernia lead to 6-1. 
  • Alvernia responded with two goals in the next five minutes thanks to a Kerchner goal after a beautiful assist from Hailey Miller and a Smith unassisted goal pushed the lead back to seven, 8-1. 
  • The Eagles responded at the five minute mark in the half to cut it to 8-2 but the Golden Wolves tacked on two goals in the final four minutes of the quarter to take an eight goal, 10-2 lead into the half. Hannah Tyler and Ashley Mckeever both netted unassisted goals for Alvernia and Mckeever's was the first of her career. 
  • Eastern found the back of the net early in the second half but Alvernia bounced back with a Mia Martin goal after another Brower assist to push the lead back to eight, 11-3. 
  • The Eagles tallied a second goal two minutes later to make it 11-4 but Alvernia responded yet again with back to back goals from Tyler and a Makenna Thomas goal to take a 14-4 lead into the final quarter. 
  • Thomas then opened up the fourth quarter with an unassisted goal in the first three minutes to push the lead to 11, 15-4. 
  • Eastern tacked on one final goal with five minutes to go to make it 15-5. 
  • Alvernia netted one final goal at the buzzer after Kerchner assisted Haylee Roller in the final seconds of the game to secure the 16-5 victory over the Eagles. 

Inside the Box Score
  • Sherrin Smith led the way with four goals for the Golden Wolves and added six shots on goal, four draw controls and one draw control. 
  • Hannah Tyler tallied three goals, picked up five ground balls and caused four turnovers. 
  • Lindsay Kerchner, Ashley Mckeever and Gracie Brower all recorded three points on the night with Kerchner tallying two goals and an assist and Brower and Mckeever dished out two assists and netted a goal. Mckeever also caused two turnovers. 
  • Makenna Thomas netted two goals and Haylee Roller, Mia Martin and Sophia Ruocco all recorded one goal for Alvernia. 
  • Cailyn Hawley caused a team high five turnovers, picked up five draw controls and a career high eight ground balls. 
  • Kayleigh Kight scooped up five ground balls for the Golden Wolves and caused three turnovers. Kight also eclipsed the 100 ground ball mark for her career in the victory. 
  • Hannah Wolfe earned the win in goal for Alvernia and recorded three saves in net. Marissa Zocco also tallied three saves for Alvernia in the second half in net.

  • The Golden Wolves are back in action on Saturday when they host Hood College in another MAC Commonwealth clash at 12:00 PM.
