Golden Wolves Drop MAC Commonwealth Opener to Pride, 15-5

Chester, Pa (April 5, 2025) - Alvernia University (2-9, 0-1) fell to Widener University (5-7, 1-1) 15-5, Saturday afternoon in a MAC Commonwealth women's lacrosse matchup at Widener. 

The Pride jumped out to an 11-2 lead at the half and then outscored the Golden Wolves 4-3 in the second half to secure the victory over the Golden Wolves. 

How it Happened
  • Widener jumped out to an early 6-0 lead after netting six goals in the first quarter of the game. 
  • The Pride pushed it to 7-0 in the first two minutes of the second quarter but Alvernia responded with a goal from Sherrin Smith two minutes later to get the Golden Wolves on the board, 7-1. 
  • Widener added two more goals to extend the lead to 9-1 with under two minutes to go in the half. 
  • Alvernia's Sophia Ruocco found the back of the net with 40 seconds to go in the half to make it a 9-2 game. 
  • Widener pushed the lead to nine after two goals in the final 20 seconds of the first half to take an 11-2 lead into the halftime break. 
  • The Pride netted the only two goals of the third quarter to push the lead to 13-2 after three quarters of play. 
  • Alvernia scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter thanks to two unassisted goals from Makenna Thomas to make it 14-3. 
  • Widener tallied two of the final three goals of the game in the final four minutes of the game. Smith netted the third goal and her second of the game but the Pride secured the 15-5 victory over the Golden Wolves.

  • Makenna Thomas netted two goals for the Golden Wolves and Sherrin Smith also recorded two goals and added four draw controls. 
  • Sophia Ruocco tallied the other Alvernia goal and recorded two shots on goal. 
  • Kayleigh Kight grabbed three draw controls and picked up a team high four ground balls. 
  • Hannah Wolfe recorded eight saves in net and Marissa Zocco recorded four saves in goal for Alvernia.
