Eastern Downs Alvernia, 70-54

Reading, Pa. (Jan. 28, 2026) - Eastern University (7-11, 2-5) outscored Alvernia University (8-10, 3-4) 34-23 in the second half to pull away for a 70-54 win over the Golden Wolves on Wednesday night in MAC Commonwealth Women's Basketball action at Eastern.

The Eagles led by five at the half before Alvernia cut it down to a three point deficit early in the third quarter. But, the Eagles held Alvernia to just seven points in the third frame as Eastern built up its lead. The Eagles capped off the night with a 21 point fourth quarter to keep Alvernia from threatening.

How it Happened
  • The Eagles jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead through the first minute of action, but Taryn Woodson got the Golden Wolves going with a layup and an and-one free throw to quickly cut within two, 5-3. Woodson then evened the game at 5-5 on another layup through two minutes of action.
  • After an exchanging of points that saw Woodson convert another layup and Samatha Wade get on the board with a putback  jumper, Eastern went on a 11-2 run in the final six minutes of the opening frame to take a 22-11 lead into the second quarter.
  • A quick six points from Alvernia spread across three scorers brought Alvernia within five, 22-17, through the first 90 seconds of the second quarter. After Eastern pushed its lead back up to ten, a 3-pointer from Ryleigh Poole as the quarter eclipsed its midpoint brought the Golden Wolves back within seven, 28-21. 
  • Later in the quarter, back-to-back layups from Meghan Ruth and Wade brought the Golden Wolves within five, 30-25, with three minutes to play in the half. The two sides traded points over the next two and a half minutes, and an Alani White jumper kept Alvernia within five, 36-31, going into the half.
  • The Golden Wolves opened the second half with a layup by Ruth to get within a possession, 36-33, but the Eagles responded with a 3-pointer. Eastern then held Alvernia to five points the remainder of the quarter and built its lead up to 11, 49-38, going into the final ten minutes.
  • Eastern opened the fourth quarter with back-to-back layups to take a 15 point lead, 53-38. The Eagles built their lead up to as much as 20, 65-45, with three minutes to play in the game. The Golden Wolves would not threaten as Eastern came away with the 70-54 win.
Inside the Box Score
  • Taryn Woodson led Alvernia with 16 points, nine rebounds, and five assists.
  • Samantha Wade finished in double-digits with 13 points and also grabbed six rebounds.
  • Eastern's Jeriyah Johnson led Eastern with 21 points, and shot 3-for-4 from 3-point range. The Eagles finished with ten made 3-pointers on the night.
