Golden Wolves Down Cougars, 5-3

Wilkes-Barre, Pa. (Jan.9, 2026) - Alvernia University (7-6, 5-4) scored four unanswered goals to complete a comeback and secure a 5-3 win over Misericordia University (1-10-1, 1-6-1) on Friday evening in MAC Men's Ice Hockey action at the Toyota Sportsplex.

The Cougars took a 3-1 lead late in the first period off of two power-play goals. Alvernia evened the game in the second period at 3-3 on a Sean Kenny goal. Kenny then scored a short-handed goal five minutes into the third period to break the tie before the Golden Wolves went on to secure the 5-3 win.

How it Happened
  • The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute of action on a putback goal by Brendan Vettraino. Alvernia answered five minutes later as Matthew Imbriano netted his second goal of the season with seven minutes to play in the first period.
  • The game remained tied at 1-1 for just over four minutes until the Cougars scored two power-play goals in under a minute to take a 3-1 lead. The Golden Wolves had two late opportunities to get a goal back in the final minute of the period, but both shots were saved as the Cougars took a 3-1 lead into the second period.
  • Alvernia peppered the Cougars in the opening minutes of the second period, and Gabriel Flammia got a shot through off the assist of Will White to bring Alvernia back within one, 3-2, through just under four minutes of second period action.
  • The Golden Wolves evened the game at 3-3 11 minutes later. Sean Kenny collected his own rebound and got the second attempt through to tie the game with just over five minutes to play in the period.
  • Alvernia ended the period on a power-play and fired four shots on net, but the Cougars held off Alvernia to send the game into the third period tied at 3-3.
  • The Golden Wolves broke the tie four minutes into the third period. The Golden Wolves were on the penalty kill, but Kenny netted his second of the night on a short-handed goal off the assist of Keegan Driscoll.
  • Alvernia killed off a Misericordia penalty midway through the period before adding an insurance goal with five minutes to play. Anthony Piccininno scored off the assist of Flammia to give Alvernia the two goal advantage. The Golden Wolves held off the Cougars the rest of the way to secure the 5-3 win.
