Reading, Pa. (October 1, 2026) — Alvernia women's volleyball (6-5) took down the Lions of Penn State Brandywine (7-5) in a close four sets Thursday night on Jack McCloskey Court to improve to 6-0 at home.
Alvernia's Allison Wolf and Zoe Velez led the way with double-digit kills, with Wolf leading with 16 kills on the night while Olivia Jones assisted on 21 of the Golden Wolves points.
How It Happened:
- The Golden Wolves and Lions exchanged blows back and forth early in the first set, which ultimately led to a 10-10 deadlock after 20 points. Alvernia then sparked a 6-1 run to gain a sizable lead. Allison Wolf and Olivia Rohrbaugh combined for three points during the run. The Lions roared back and put the game within two points to shrink the Golden Wolves' lead to two, but despite their best efforts, Alvernia took the first set with a 5-3 run to end it. Allison Wolf, who proved critical in the two runs that gave the Golden Wolves the edge, hammered home seven kills in the first set.
- The second set mimicked the first, with both teams knotted at 10 apiece after 20 points, but was deadlocked at 17-17. Olivia Rohrbaugh ignited a Golden Wolves 8-4 run, anchored by three kills of her own, to put the Lions away in the second set.
- Penn State Brandywine quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third set, but despite that, the Golden Wolves clawed back into the set and took a 4-3 lead after Melina Stinsky dealt a service ace to the Lions. Stalemated once again throughout the entire third set, Alvernia stared down a 21-21 tie to secure the sweep. Out of an Alvernia timeout, the Lions prevented the sweep with a 4-1 run to steal set three.
- The fourth set was all Golden Wolves, as they jumped out to an early 10-5 lead over the Lions. The Lions never wavered, though, and stayed in the fight until the Golden Wolves ripped off an 8-4 run to push what was a two-point lead, at 12-10, to a seven-point lead with just five points left to secure. Zoe Velez and Olivia Rohrbaugh struck for three kills in the last five points for the Golden Wolves as they secured the fourth-set win, 25-17.
