Grantham, Pa. (October 27, 2026) — Alvernia women's volleyball (10-12, 3-3 MAC) took Messiah (14-9, 4-2 MAC) to its limits in tightly contested sets at Messiah on Tuesday night.
After a slow first set, the Golden Wolves took the Falcons deep into the second set and were unable to hang on in the third, as the Golden Wolves fell to .500 in conference play with two more conference bouts on deck.
How It Happened:
- The Golden Wolves and Falcons stalemated for the first fourteen points at 7-7 and exchanged points back and forth. The Falcons then capitalized on three straight service aces to spark a 13-6 run, which allowed them to run away with the first set, 25-14.
- The second set ebbed and flowed for both teams as they both scored one after another. The Golden Wolves started off with a 2-0 lead that was quickly erased by the Falcons. The set was deadlocked at 14 apiece before the Falcons jumped out to a 19-16 lead off the back of a 5-2 run. The Golden Wolves clawed back and ended up taking a commanding 23-20 lead with just two points left to secure.
- The Falcons did not go down without a fight, and off the back of a service error, had things tied up at 24-24. The Golden Wolves won the early tug-of-war, but the Falcons battled back for three consecutive points to keep things tied as both teams climbed to 27 apiece. At that point, Messiah took its first lead of the extra points and capitalized to take set two, 29-27, and take a commanding 2-0 set lead.
- After the surge of momentum from the previous set, the Golden Wolves found themselves in a hole early in the set but continued to battle back against the Falcons. Messiah sparked an 8-3 run to take a 15-9 lead in the third set that proved too much for the Golden Wolves to battle back from as they fell 25-21 and were swept by the Falcons.
