Field Hockey Knocks Off Conference Rival Albright in 2-0 Victory

READING Pa. (October 7) - On Wednesday afternoon, the Alvernia University field hockey team (5-5) took down conference foe Albright College, 2-0, on the road. The Golden Wolves were the aggressor early, and it paid off with an Ava Michael goal in the eighth minute of the first period to give Alvernia the 1-0 lead. Despite shutting out the Lions in the second period and registering six shots, the Golden Wolves only led 1-0 entering the half. Coming out of the break, despite surrendering an early penalty corner, the Golden Wolves offense got through with a Natalie Parent goal in the 41st minute to give Alvernia the 2-0 lead. Both teams would trade shots in the fourth period, but stout defense held true, and the Golden Wolves would propel themselves to their first conference win of the season.

How It Happened

  • In the first period, Alvernia got aggressive early and tallied four shots on goal with three penalty corners within the first eight minutes. However, 14 seconds later, Sofia Mollura connected with Ava Michael to give Alvernia the 1-0 lead. Albright responded with two shots of their own, but the Golden Wolves defense picked up a block and a save from Jazmin Mayfield. Alvernia did tally three shots late with one penalty corner, but no scores were registered, ending the period.
  • The second period was all Alvernia, but despite the consistent pressure, picking up two penalty corners and six shots, none could get past the final defense. The Golden Wolves defense was stifling, not allowing a single shot from the Lions.
  • Albright got going early, picking up a penalty corner in the 31st minute that led to a shot blocked by Alvernia. However, despite the early push, the Golden Wolves got back on the attack, and four shots later, Natalie Parent found the back of the cage in the 41st minute, giving Alvernia the 2-0 lead.
  • In the fourth period, both teams were aggressive and found success in their approaches. The Lions tallied two shots in the first minute of the fourth period. Alvernia responded with two shots of their own. Both squads exchanged shots halfway through the period, but neither could get through. For the final seven minutes, neither team picked up a goal, with Alvernia prevailing in the 2-0 win on the road.
