Mustangs Pull Away in Second Half to Down Alvernia, 88-72

Owings Mills, MD (Jan. 31, 2026) - Stevenson University (10-9, 2-6) posted a 49-point second half to pull away from Alvernia University (10-8, 4-4) and secure an 88-72 win over the Golden Wolves on Saturday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth Men's Basketball action at Stevenson.

The Golden Wolves led for a majority of the opening ten minutes of action before Stevenson tied it at 23-23 to ignite a back and forth to close out the first half. Stevenson took just a four point advantage into the second frame and the back and forth continued through the opening minutes of the second half. After four ties through the first ten minutes of the second half, Stevenson began to pull away. The Mustangs outscored Alvernia 31-16 in the final ten minutes of action, pushing their lead to as much as 21 points with three minutes to play before going on to take the 88-72 win.

How it Happened
  • The Golden Wolves opened the game with a Janye Stanley 3-pointer and the Mustangs answered with back-to-back jumpers to ignite the back and forth play that marked the majority of the game. Alvernia took the lead back on a Stanley layup and made it an 11-6 game on back-to-back Robert Cottrell 3-pointers.
  • Alvernia continued to hold onto its lead and built it up to a six point advantage, 21-15, on a Rasheem Dearry 3-pointer with 11:30 to play in the half. A quick five points from Stevenson brought the Mustangs within one, 21-20, as the half eclipsed its midpoint. The Mustangs then tied the game at 23-23 on a 3-pointer with 8:34 to play in the half.
  • The Golden Wolves quickly took back the lead on a Dearry layup in transition and again built their lead up to six, 32-26, three minutes later as Elijah Hamilton put in a layup. But, Stevenson held Alvernia to just three points for the final four and a half minutes of the first half. The Mustangs scored 13 points during that stretch to take a 39-35 lead into the break.
  • The Golden Wolves chipped away at Stevenson's lead to open the second half and tied the game at 42-42 on a layup and made and-one free throw by Cottrell with 17:40 to play. Alvernia then took the lead back on a Hamilton Jumper and made it a 47-44 game on another 3-pointer from Dearry.
  • The two teams tied twice more over the next few minutes and Alvernia trailed by just one, 57-56, with ten minutes to play. But, Stevenson stormed away from there. The Mustangs outscored Alvernia 31-16 in the final ten minutes. The Mustangs shot 11-for-13 during that span, and held Alvernia to 6-for-16 shooting with six turnovers. Stevenson built up its lead to as much as 21 points with three minutes to play en route to the 88-72 win.
