Golden Wolves Roll Cougars to Open Spring Break, 5-3

Fort Pierce, FL (March 1, 2026) - Alvernia University (2-0) downed Misericordia University (2-4), 5-3, Sunday afternoon in a non-conference baseball matchup down in Fort Pierce, Florida.

The win marked the first game of Alvernia's spring break trip down to Fort Pierce and also its first game in over two weeks after taking down preseason #4 Kean, 7-3, on February 14th.

The Cougars held a 3-0 lead after four innings of play but the Golden Wolves swung the lead in their favor thanks to two run home runs by Will Wooding in the fifth inning and Harold Ivery III in the seventh to take a 4-3 advantage after seven innings. The Golden Wolves tacked on one more run for insurance in the top of the ninth inning thanks to another Woodring RBI to secure the 5-3 victory.

How it Happened
  • The Golden Wolves and the Cougars went back to back scoreless innings to start the game before the Cougars broke the game open in the bottom of the third inning with a two run homer off the bat of Owen Daminger to make it a 2-0 ballgame.
  • Misericordia tacked on another run in the next inning thanks to an RBI double from Shane Patten pushed the Misericordia lead to 3-0.
  • The Golden Wolves bounced back with two runs in the next half inning to cut the lead to one, 3-2. Jack Zabarsky started the inning with a walk and then stole second on a dirt ball read. Will Woodring then stepped into the box and blasted a two run shot over the left center field fence to make it a one run game.
  • Both teams went scoreless in the sixth frame before the Golden Wolves grabbed the lead in the top of the seventh. Zabarksy worked another walk and Harold Ivery III stepped up and smoked a two run homer over the fence in right and put the Golden Wolves up 4-3.
  • The Cougars threatened in the seventh and eighth innings but the Alvernia pitching staff got out of trouble as the game headed to the top of the ninth inning with the Golden Wolves holding a one run, 4-3, advantage.
  • Alvernia tacked on one more run for good measure in the top of the ninth inning after Bobby Hansen doubled to lead off the inning and then later came around to score off the bat of Woodring to push the Alvernia lead to two, 5-3, heading to the bottom of the ninth.
  • Alvernia's Brad Coley struck out the first two Cougars to start the bottom of the ninth but then hit Rafael Fernandez with a pitch to bring the tying run to the plate but it did not last for long as Coley picked off Fernandez at first base to secure the victory for the Golden Wolves and earned the save.

Inside the Box Score
  • Alvernia backstop Will Woodring continued his solid start to the season with a team leading three RBIs and a two run homer.

  • Jack Zabarsky worked two walks and recorded a single in the DH spot and also tallied a stolen base.
