Golden Wolves Split With Lions to Open MAC Commonwealth Play

Reading, Pa. (March 14, 2026) - Alvernia University (6-8, 1-1) opened conference play on Saturday with a series split against Albright College (6-4, 1-1) in MAC Commonwealth softball action at Albright.

The Golden Wolves pulled away late in game one to take the opener, 9-4. But, the Lions responded with a 6-0 shutout win over Alvernia to take game two and split the series. The win marked Albright's first regular season win over Alvernia since the Lions swept Alvernia in 2019.

Game One: Alvernia 9, Albright 4
How it Happened
  • Alvernia loaded the bases with one out following walks for Alexia Fitzgerald and Taylor McClain and a hit by pitch for Meryn Bellacima. The Golden Wolves then plated a run on a bases loaded walk by Angelina Sponheimer to bring in Fitzgerald. Lauren Jascewsky then hit a triple over the reach of the left fielder to clear the bases and give Alvernia the 4-0 lead. Alvernia closed out the inning with a groundout off the bat of Summer Montgomery that allowed Jascewsky to come home and give the Golden Wolves the 5-0 lead.
  • Albright answered in the home half of the first, putting two on with one out before hitting a three-run home run to quickly get within two, 5-3, going into the second inning. The Lions then pulled within one, 5-4, on an RBI double to center field.
  • After a scoreless middle stretch, Alvernia got a little breathing room in the top of the sixth on a Kalli Bunnell double to left to score Montgomery and give Alvernia the 6-4 lead. The Golden Wolves then extended their lead in the top of the seventh. An RBI double by Sponheimer drove in Abigaile Millhouse, pinch running following a single by Bellacima. With runners on the corners, Montgomery hit a single up the middle to score Jascewsky and Sponheimer and give Alvernia the 9-4 lead.
  • Alvernia did not allow a base runner by the Lions in the seventh as the Golden Wolves came away with the 9-4 win.
