Golden Wolves Drop Series Opener to Pride, 8-4

Chester, Pa. (March 20, 2026) - Widener University (5-8, 2-2) hit three home runs en route to an 8-4 victory over Alvernia University (6-6, 1-3) Friday evening in game one of a MAC Commonwealth baseball series at Widener.

The Pride scored six runs in the first three innings of the game and tacked on two more in the fifth and the eighth en route to the four run victory.

How it Happened
  • The Pride jumped out in the lead early with a three run homer in the home half of the first inning to take an early 3-0 lead for the Pride.
  • The Golden Wolves responded in the top half of the second inning after back to back singles to start the inning by Bobby Hansen and Jack Zabarsky put runners on first and second. After Christopher Babkowski beat out a double play ball to second and moved runners to first and third, Logan Nelson ripped an RBI single to center and drove in Hansen and pulled the Golden Wolves within two, 3-1.
  • The Pride bounced back with three runs in the bottom of the third to grab the lead back in their favor, 6-1. Widener tallied a two run homer to right field and an RBI single in the frame to extend the lead to five.
  • Widener tacked on another run in the fifth inning after a solo shot to left center off the bat of Brandon Yoder pushed it to a 7-1 Widener lead.
  • The Golden Wolves pulled one back in the top of the seventh after Timmy Hitchcock ripped an RBI triple into the right center gap and scored Max Hansen to make it a 7-2 deficit.
  • Alvernia pulled within three in the next inning after Mike Mele worked a bases loaded walk to drive in a run and Alex Bartlett Jr. tallied a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Logan Nelson and pull the Golden Wolves within three, 7-4.
  • Widener responded and added an insurance run in the home half of the eighth inning and shut the Golden Wolves out in the top of the ninth to seal the 8-4 victory over Alvernia.
