Golden Wolves Run Past Lions, 9-4

Reading, Pa. (March 24, 2026) - Alvernia University (8-8) scored four runs in the fifth inning and tacked on two more in the seventh en route to a 9-4 victory over Penn State Berks (2-11-1) Tuesday in a non-conference baseball matchup down in Angelica Park.

Alvernia center fielder Logan Nelson recorded his 100th career hit in the victory.

The Golden Wolves held a 3-0 lead after three innings of play before the Lions answered back to two runs in the top of the fourth to make it a one run ballgame. Alvernia bounced back with a four run fifth inning and then added two more insurance runs in the home half of the seventh to secure the five run, 9-4, victory.

How it Happened
  • Alvernia took the lead in the second after a scoreless first frame when Jake Chapman pulled a two RBI single through the right side and into left field to score Christopher Babkowski and Logan Nelson to put the Golden Wolves up 2-0.
  • The Golden Wolves tacked on a third run in the bottom of the third inning after Timmy Hitchcock led off the inning with a double, Bobby Hansen traded places with Hitchcock with an RBI double to put Alvernia up 3-0.
  • The Lions pulled two runs back in the top of the fourth inning after Jackson Brancato tallied a two out, two RBI single down the left field line to cut the Alvernia lead to one, 3-2.
  • Alvernia answered back in the home half of the fifth inning with a four spot to take a five run lead. Babkowski started things with a bases loaded sacrifice fly to left field that scored Hansen and then Joe Glass pulled a two RBI single down the right field line to put the Golden Wolves up 6-2.
  • The Golden Wolves added one more in the inning after Chapman grounded out to first but Glass was able to score after a PSU Berks mental mistake and pushed the lead to five, 7-2.
  • The Lions put one up on the board in the top of the sixth inning after an Alvernia error allowed a run to score but Alvernia answered back yet again in the bottom of the seventh inning with two more runs. Chapman slapped an RBI double down the left field line that plated Glass and then Mike Pulcini followed with an RBI double down the left field line as well to score Chapman and put the Golden Wolves up 9-3.
  • Penn State Berks tallied one run in the top of the ninth inning but it was not enough as Alvernia's Zachary Shultz shut the door for the Golden Wolves and secured the 9-4 victory over the Lions.
