Oberman Nets Double OT Winner to Lead Golden Wolves Past Griffins, 11-10

Reading, Pa. (March 25, 2026) - Alvernia University (6-3) downed Gwynedd Mercy University (5-4), 11-10, in double overtime Wednesday evening in a non-conference men's lacrosse thriller at Alvernia University.

Alvernia sophomore attackman Charles Oberman netted the double OT goal to win the game for the Golden Wolves thanks to an assist from Jack Natyshak with 3:05 to play in the second overtime period to put the Golden Wolves on top.

Alvernia outscored Gwynedd Mercy 4-1 in the final 12 minutes of regulation and then netted the lone game winner in the second overtime period en route to the victory.

The win comes as the second overtime victory for Alvernia on home soil after a 16-15 victory over King's earlier this month and also comes as Alvernia's first win over Gwynedd Mercy in program history.

How it Happened
  • Gwynedd Mercy took the early lead five minutes into the first period after a David Crespo goal but the Golden Wolves responded with their opening goal of the game three minutes later when Keegan Driscoll assisted Ethan McManus to make it a 1-1 game.
  • The Griffins then netted a goal in the final two minutes of the first period to take a 2-1 lead into the second quarter.
  • Gwynedd Mercy then added to its lead at the start of the second and rattled off two goals in the first five minutes of the second quarter to push the lead to three, 4-1.
  • Both teams went scoreless over the next seven minutes before the Golden Wolves pulled two goals back in the final three minutes of the half to cut the deficit to one, 4-3, heading to the halftime break. Charles Oberman assisted Zackary Moats and Jack Natyshak connected with Jimmy Sparacio for the Golden Wolves at the end of the half.
  • The Griffins came out of the halftime break and netted two goals in the first three minutes of the half to extend their lead to three, 6-3.
  • Alvernia grabbed one back under a minute later thanks to a Moats unassisted goal but Gwynedd Mercy answered with two more goals over the next four minutes to give the Griffins their largest lead of the evening, a four goal, 8-4 advantage.
  • The Golden Wolves responded with two more goals in the final five minutes of the third quarter to cut the Gwynedd Mercy lead to just two, 8-6, heading into the fourth quarter.
  • Gwynedd Mercy got right back on top and made it a three goal lead just a minute and 14 seconds into the fourth quarter after a Colin Vannais unassisted goal made it a 9-6 Griffins lead but that did not last for long as the Golden Wolves rattled off three goals in the next five minutes of play to tie the game at nine.
  • Sparacio and Natyshak both tallied unassisted goals to pull the Golden Wolves within one and then Moats dished out an assist to Oberman on a man-up opportunity to level the score at nine with 8:26 to go in the fourth quarter.
  • Gwynedd Mercy responded immediately to take the lead back, 10-9, after they won the ensuing faceoff and went right down and scored eight seconds after the Golden Wolves tied the game.
  • After four scoreless minutes the Golden Wolves found their leveler and once again it came from Oberman thanks to a Sparacio assist with 3:52 to go in regulation.
  • Neither team could find the game winner in the final three minutes of the fourth quarter as the game headed to the first overtime period tied at ten.
  • The Griffins tallied four shots in the overtime period to Alvernia's three and sent just one on target but Alvernia's Nathan Byrne stood tall in goal and kept the Griffins out of the net to send the game to the second overtime period still locked at ten.
  • Alvernia netted the game winner just under two minutes into the second overtime period thanks to Oberman's third goal of the game. Alvernia swung the ball around the top of the Gwynedd defense until the ball ended up with Natyshak. Natyshak then swung the ball one more time to the stick of Oberman who ripped a shot from about ten yards away and into the bottom corner of the Gwynedd goal to give the Golden Wolves the 11-10 victory over the Griffins.
