Golden Wolves Roll Past Griffins, 18-9

Reading, Pa. (March 25, 2026) - Alvernia University (2-8) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back en route to an 18-9 win over Gwynedd Mercy University (1-9) on Wednesday evening in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Alvernia.

Alvernia held the Griffins scoreless through the first quarter while building up a 5-0 lead. Alvernia kept the Griffins off the board until there were ten minutes to play in the second quarter. Alvernia allowed just that one goal in the first half, taking an 11-1 lead into the break. The Griffins added eight in the second half, but Alvernia posted seven more goals of its own to take the 18-9 win.

How it Happened
  • Alvernia took the 1-0 lead on a goal by Hannah Tyler and then took a 3-0 lead on back-to-back goals by Lindsay Kerchner with five minutes to play in the first. Grace Weissenberger and Makena Thomas then capped off the quarter for Alvernia with goals of their own to give Alvernia the 5-0 lead going into the second quarter.
  • Alvernia opened the second quarter with a player-up goal by Mia Martin off the assist of Haylee Roller to take the 6-0 lead with 14:40 to play in the quarter. A pair of quick goals by Tyler and Ashley Mckeever then gave Alvernia the 8-0 lead with ten minutes to play in the quarter.
  • The Griffins got on the board with an unassisted goal with 9:48 to play in the half. But, Alvernia scored the final three goals of the quarter to take an 11-1 lead into the half. Cailyn Hawley, Tyler, and Thomas each found the back of the net for Alvernia in the final stretch of the second quarter. 
  • Gwynedd Mercy scored a pair of goals to open the second half to get back within eight, 11-3, but a pair of goals by Tyler pushed Alvernia's lead back up to ten, 13-3, with 7:44 to play in the third. The Griffins again answered with two more goals, but Alvernia closed out the quarter with a player-down goal by Grace Brower off the assist of Haylee Roller to take the 14-5 lead into the final 15 minutes.
  • The Griffins opened the scoring 25 seconds into the fourth quarter, but Alvernia responded with three goals in two minutes to once again push the game back to a running clock, 17-6. Kerchner, Thomas, and Weissenberger all found the back of the net in the quick run for Alvernia.
  • Gwynedd Mercy outscored Alvernia 3-1 the rest of the way, with Alvernia's final goal of the evening coming from Tyler to cap off a six-goal performance as Alvernia took the 18-9 win.
Inside the Box Score
  • Both Hannah Tyler and Grace Weissenberger finished with six points for the Golden Wolves. Tyler's six points came off of six goals, while Weissenberger finished with two goals and four assists. 
  • Makenna Thomas finished with five points off of three goals and two assists. Gracie Brower finished with four points off a goal and three assists, and Haylee Roller finished with four assists.
  • Cailyn Hawley finished with eight ground balls and two caused turnovers. Kayleigh Kight finished the evening with five ground balls and three caused turnovers. 
  • Addison Bolz, Sarah Maas, and Marissa Zocco all split time in net for Alvernia, combining for six saves.
