Lions Down Golden Wolves in MAC Commonwealth Opener, 12-8

Reading, Pa. (April 1, 2026) - Alvernia University (2-9, 0-1) dropped its MAC Commonwealth opener to Albright College (7-4, 1-0), 12-8, on Wednesday evening in women's lacrosse action at Albright. 

The Lions took a 3-1 lead through the first quarter and led 8-4 at the half. The Lions then built their lead up to 11-5 through the third quarter. Alvernia outscored Albright 3-1 in the fourth, but it was not enough to overcome Albright's lead as the Lions took the game, 12-8.

Albright took the early 1-0 lead through 1:06 of action before Alvernia tied it up at 1-1 off a Makenna Thomas goal with 6:10 to play in the opening frame. The Lions retook the lead, 2-1, with 4:01 to play in the quarter and it a 3-1 game with 1:13 to play in the first.

Albright took the 3-1 lead into the second quarter, but Alvernia closed within one, 3-2, on a goal by Hannah Tyler 1:08 into the quarter. Albright answered 90 seconds later on a player up goal to push its advantage back up to two, 4-2. After the Lions built their lead up to four, 6-2, with 7:30 to play in the quarter, Alvernia cut Albright's lead in half, 6-3, on Thomas' second goal of the evening. Following another pair of goals by the Lions, Alvernia closed out the half with a goal from Hannah Tyler off the assist of Ashley Mckeever to make it an 8-4 game going into the half.

The Lions took a 10-4 lead through the first seven minutes of the third quarter. Alvernia got back within five, 10-5, on a free position goal by Thomas with 6:24 to play in the frame. But, the Lions had the last say of the quarter and scored with 3:20 to play in the third to take a six goal advantage, 11-5, into the final 15 minutes. 

After a scoreless first five minutes of the fourth quarter, Albright found the back of the goal one last time to take a 12-5 lead with 9:44 to play. Alvernia got back on the board with a goal from Grace Weissenberger to make it a 12-6 game with 8:58 to play. Just under three minutes later, Haylee Roller made it a five goal game off the assist of Tyler. Alvernia scored once more as Weissenberger netted her second of the quarter to make it a 12-8 game. But, Alvernia could not get another shot off as the Lions took the 12-8 win to open MAC Commonwealth play.

Weissenberger and Thomas led Alvernia with three points off of two goals and an assist each. Thomas also picked up three points off of three goals. Kayleigh Kight finished with a team high five caused turnovers and four ground balls. Addison Bolz finished with nine saves in net for Alvernia.

The Golden Wolves have off this weekend for the Easter holiday and are back in action on Wednesday at Hood.
