Sasso Deals, Golden Wolves Down Eagles, 10-2

Reading, Pa. (April 10, 2026) - Alvernia University (13-16, 5-8) took down Eastern University (20-9, 7-6), 10-2, Friday evening to take game one of the MAC Commonwealth baseball series down in Angelica Park.

The Golden Wolves got a terrific outing from starter Chris Sasso who tossed 7.2 innings of one run baseball, scattered four hits and struck out six batters. The Alvernia offense provided Sasso with run support from the jump with two runs in the first and third innings to give the senior lefthander a 4-0 lead. The Golden Wolves tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the sixth while Sasso kept the Eagles scoreless. Eastern broke up the shutout with a two spot in the top of the eighth but the Golden Wolves added two more insurance runs to secure the 10-2 victory in game one of the MAC Commonwealth series.

Junior Timmy Hitchcock also eclipsed the 100 career hit mark with a single up the middle in the first inning and became the second Golden Wolves to hit the 100 career hit mark this season.

How it Happened
  • The Golden Wolves struck first in the top of the first inning with a two spot to take the early lead. A leadoff single by Max Hansen gave the Golden Wolves an early baserunner and Hansen wasted no time getting into scoring position and stole second. Jack Zabarsky then singled into the left center gap to score Hansen and put Alvernia in the lead, 1-0.
  • Alvernia shortstop Timmy Hitchcock followed Zabarsky with a single up the middle to advance Zabarsky to third and put Hitchcock at the 100 career hit mark.
  • Will Woodring put the Golden Wolves up 2-0 in the bottom of the first after he drove in Zabarsky by grounding into a double play.
  • Alvernia added two more runs in the home half of the third inning after the pairing of Max Hansen and Zabarsky got on base to start the inning. Hitchcock then moved the runners over to second and third via a sacrifice bunt. Woodring scored Hansen with an RBI infield single into the five-six hole and Bobby Hansen drove in Zabarsky with a sacrifice fly to right field to extend the Alvernia lead to four.
  • The Golden Wolves then broke it open in the home half of the sixth inning with four more runs to extend the lead to eight. The Golden Wolves put runners on second and third before Mike Pulcini ripped a groundball to the Eastern shortstop, he then fired the ball home in an attempt to get Harold Ivery III at the plate but it was not in time as Alvernia pushed the lead to 5-0. Logan Nelson then scored via an Eastern Wild pitch to push the lead to six.
  • After a second Zabarsky hit by pitch loaded the bases, Hitchcock flipped a groundball to the right side and beat out the double play attempt from the Eagles. Pulcini scored on the initial crack of the bat and Max Hansen rounded third and took off for home after realizing the Eastern first baseman was not looking and made it a 8-0 ballgame.
  • The Eagles got on the board in the top of the eighth inning thanks to a two RBI double off the bat of Matthew Gonglik to make it an 8-2 Alvernia lead.
  • The Golden Wolves responded with two runs of their own in the home half of the eighth when Max Hansen and Zabarsky both tallied RBI doubles to push the lead back to eight, 10-2.
  • Alvernia reliever Logan Solomine came into the game in the top of the ninth and shut the Eagles down 1,2,3 to secure the 10-2 victory for the Golden Wolves.
