Alvernia Baseball honored its 2026 senior class prior to game one.
Alvernia took game one of the doubleheader by a score of 7-3 after a walk off grand slam by senior outfielder Joe Glass to tie the Commonwealth series at one apiece. York then bounced back and downed the Golden Wolves 15-4 in eight innings in game two behind a 20 hit performance by the Spartans to take the series two games to one.
Game 1: Alvernia: 7, York: 3 (7 inn.)
How it Happened
- The Golden Wolves and the Spartans were locked in a pitchers duel for the first three innings of the game before the Golden Wolves put up a two spot in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead. Joe Glass got things started with a two out double down the left field line and then came in to score on a Mike Pulcini RBI single into the left center gap. Max Hansen then stepped into the box and ripped a pinch hit double over the right fielder's head to score Pulcini from first and put Alvernia up 2-0.
- Alvernia and York went scoreless in the fifth inning before York grabbed the lead with three runs in the top of the sixth. An RBI single halved the Alvernia lead and then a two RBI ground rule double to right field threw the Spartans in the lead, 3-2.
- The Golden Wolves got two runners on in the bottom of the sixth inning and moved them over to second and third after a sacrifice bunt by Glass put the runners into scoring position. Pulcini then tied the game with an RBI groundout to level the game at three.
- The pitching combination of seniors Brad Coley and Logan Solomine got out of a jam in the top of the seventh which saw the Spartans have runners on second and third but Solomine came in and struck out the York batter and sent the game into the bottom of the seventh tied at three.
- After a leadoff groundout, Will Woodring singled to left field to put the winning run on the basepaths. Collin McCarron then pinch ran for Woodring and advanced to second on a groundout to the pitcher. Bobby Hansen was then intentionally walked to create a double-play opportunity for the Spartans but it was quickly taken away after Logan Nelson was hit by a pitch which loaded the bases. In stepped senior outfielder Joe Glass with the bases loaded and two outs. Glass took the first pitch of the at bat for a ball and then turned on the very next pitch and sent an absolute rocket over the right field wall and into the York bullpen to walk game one off in grand fashion and give the Golden Wolves a 7-3 victory in game one of the doubleheader. The home run was Glass's first home run of his career.
