Alvernia, York Split Commonwealth Doubleheader

York, Pa. (April 18, 2026) - Alvernia University (16-18, 6-6) split its MAC Commonwealth series with York College (6-6, 17-8) on Saturday afternoon in conference softball action at York.

The Golden Wolves took game one, 7-4. Alvernia held a 2-0 lead in game two before York tied it up at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth. The game went to extras tied at 2-2 before York walked it off with a single up the middle to secure the 3-2 win and series split

How it Happened
  • The Golden Wolves wasted no time getting to work, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Alvernia led off the game with three straight walks by Alexia Fitzgerald, Taylor McClain, and Lauren Jascewsky to load the bases with no outs. Meryn Bellacima was then hit by a pitch to bring in Fitzgerald and give Alvernia the early 1-0 lead. Angelina Sponheimer followed by getting hit by a pitch as well to bring in McClain and give Alvernia the 2-0 lead. The Spartans got out of the inning, but Alvernia took the early 2-0 lead.
  • The Spartans answered and evened the game in the bottom of the second. York scored on a bunt for a base hit and a fielder's choice to even the game at 2-2.
  • The tie did not last long as Alvernia answered back in the top of the third. Savannah Richards led off the inning with a walk and moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt by Summer Montgomery. Alvernia then loaded the bases on an Ava Rudolph single and a Kalli Bunnell hit by pitch. Richards came in to score on a bases-loaded walk by Fitzgerald to give Alvernia the 3-2 lead. Alvernia then took the 4-2 lead as Rudolph came around to score on a fielder's choice off the at bat of McClain. 
  • The Spartans got back within one, 4-3, on a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth before Alvernia added onto its lead with three runs in the top of the fifth. Both McClain and Bunnell reached on singles to put two on with one out. Jascewsky then reached on a fielding error to load the bases. Bellacima reached on a fielder's choice to bring in Bunnell, and Sponheimer was hit by a pitch to bring in McClain and give Alvernia the 6-3 lead. The inning was capped off by a ground out by Richards to drive in Jascewsky and give Alvernia the 7-3 lead.
  • The Spartans got a run back in the fifth. After not getting a base runner in the sixth, the Spartans threatened in the seventh. York had the game-tying run at the base, but Alvernia forced York into a ground ball double play to get out of the jam.

Game Two: York 3, Alvernia 2 (8 Innings)

How it Happened
  • After a scoreless first inning, Alvernia got on the board in the top of the second. Angelina Sponheimer led off the inning with a single up the middle. Later in the inning, Ava Rudolph hit a two-out double to the right gap to drive in Rudolph and give Alvernia the 1-0 lead.
  • After a scoreless stretch, Alvernia took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth. Rudolph got on via a walk and was joined on base by Bunnell, who reached on a single through the left side. Taylor McClain then hit a two-out single down the left field line to score Rudolph and give Alvernia the 2-0 lead.
  • After three hitless innings, York got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. The Spartans led off the inning with a double to record their first hit of the game. They then loaded the bases with a walk and an Alvernia error. The Spartans got on the board with a bases loaded passed ball, and tied the game at 2-2 a sacrifice fly. Alvernia got out of the inning with the game tied at 2-2. 
  • Alvernia put runners in scoring position in the fifth and sixth innings, but could not convert. Alvernia's defense also kept the Spartans off the board as the game headed into extras tied at 2-2.
  • Alvernia did not get a runner on in the top of the eighth, and the Spartans led off the home half of the eighth with a walk. Alvernia got the lead runner out on a fielder's choice, but York put a runner on second via a stolen base. She then came home on a walk-off single up the middle to give York the 3-2 win.
