Gettysburg, Pa. (September 1, 2026) — Alvernia Field Hockey (0-1) dropped an overtime nail-biter to Gettysburg (1-0), 2-1, on Tuesday night at Gettysburg. This marks the schools' sixth overtime game in only 10 meetings.
The Bullets rained down heavy offensive pressure in the first half and took a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute of play off a putback goal. The Golden Wolves fought back and capitalized on a corner opportunity with 7:43 remaining when reigning MAC Offensive Player of the Year Ava Michael netted the equalizer with a backhand strike that forced overtime. The Bullets poured it on in the overtime period and scored the game-winner at the midway point of the period.
HOW IT HAPPENED

The Bullets tested Golden Wolves' Jazmin Mayfield early with five first-half shots, three of which were turned aside by Mayfield.

Just under 20 minutes into gameplay, the Bullets broke through when they found the back of the net off one of those Mayfield saves for a rebound goal to take a 1-0 lead.

Less than three minutes later, Ava Michael generated the first offensive look of the night off a caused turnover in the middle of the field, sliced her way through the Gettysburg defense, and was inches away from having the game knotted at one apiece ringing a shot off the post.

The Golden Wolves continued to fight off what the Bullets were sending their way, which resulted in the generation of sustained offense and solid offensive looks. The Golden Wolves were awarded their first corner of the game five minutes into the second half, which resulted in the Golden Wolves' second generated shot of the game.

As time dwindled down in the fourth quarter, the Golden Wolves' offensive attack became more aggressive, with Caroline Martin taking a drive of her own to the net, which resulted in strong offensive pressure. After having no corners in the first half, the Golden Wolves had managed to earn five corners in the second half.

One of those corners proved to be the equalizer as Sofia Mollura connected the Golden Wolves' fourth corner of the night to the top of the circle, where Ava Michael pushed, gathered, and pushed the ball to her backhand and fired a rocket into the corner of the Gettysburg goal to even the score at 1-1.

Overtime would prove to be all Gettysburg despite Alvernia's best efforts. The Bullets came out to start the period hot and were fended off by the Golden Wolves. As the Golden Wolves pushed to counterattack, they were left vulnerable on the back line, and Gettysburg capitalized.
