Five Golden Wolves Tally Goals, Alvernia Downs Wilson, 8-0

Reading, Pa. (September 24, 2026) - Alvernia University's (3-4) netted eight goals en route to a 8-0 shutout victory over Wilson College (2-4) Thursday night in a non-conference field hockey matchup at Alvernia. 

The Golden Wolves were led by Caroline Martin, who tallied a second quarter hat trick and Ava Michael added two goals in the victory. Alvernia netted five goals in the first half before tacking on three more in the second half secured the eight goal victory, the largest margin of victory in a game since the 2022 season. 

How it Happened 
  • The Golden Wolves struck first in the eighth minute of the game when Ava Michael fired the ball into the back of the net to put Alvernia up 1-0 early on. 
  • Alvernia tacked on one more before the first quarter ended to make it a 2-0 game when Jennah Hershberger connected with Alessandra Stevens to give the Golden Wolves a two goal advantage heading into the second quarter. 
  • The Golden Wolves offense then took charge and netted three goals in the second stanza, all three of which came off the stick of Caroline Martin. Martin netted her first goal of the night just over four minutes into the second quarter and would tally two more goals in just four minutes to complete the hat trick. Martin tallied her second goal after an assist from Madi Derfler and her third goal of the game came via an assist from Kelsy McClintock and gave the Golden Wolves a five goal cushion heading into the half. 
  • Alvernia then added it on and scored two goals in the 11 minutes of the third quarter after Michael netted her second goal of the game after an Alvernia penalty corner and Matisyn Derkacs followed with a goal after an Ana Jones shot was saved to push the lead to seven heading to the final quarter of play. 
  • Alvernia's Hershberger tacked on the final insurance goal for the Golden Wolves with just over two minutes to play in the game after Sarah Schaffer dished out the assist to secure the 8-0 victory for the Golden Wolves. 

Inside the Box Score
  • Caroline Martin led the way with three goals on four shots. Martin's three goals is the most in a game since teammate Ava Michael netted for against Albright last season and is Martin's second career hat trick. 
  • Ava Michael added two goals, Madi Derfler tacked on two assists, Jennah Hershberger netted a goal and added an assist as well and Alessandra Stevens and Matisyn Derkacs both scored for the Golden Wolves. 
  • Jazmin Mayfield earned the win in goal for the Golden Wolves and Maliya Crispell finished out the game in goal to help secure the combined shutout. 
  • Alvernia rattled off 31 total shots with 21 of them going on goal, earned 18 penalty corners and the eight goals by the Golden Wolves is the most in a game since 2022.
