READING, Pa. (September 29) - On Tuesday afternoon, the Alvernia University field hockey team defeated Elizabethtown University 5-2 to improve to 4-4 overall and 3-1 at home. The Golden Wolves used a balanced offensive attack to knock off the Blue Jays. Sarah Schaffer scored two goals, including her first of the season, while Carley Mackert, Alessandra Stevens, and Caroline Martin each found the back of the cage in the 5-2 victory.

The Golden Wolves got on the board early when Matisyn Derkacs connected with Sarah Schaffer, who found the back of the cage for the first time this season in the 10th minute. Nearly two minutes later, Carley Mackert scored her first goal of the season, assisted by Ava Michael, to give Alvernia a 2-0 lead heading into the second quarter.

After a scoreless 10 minutes, the Blue Jays were able to get past the Alvernia back line and cut the Golden Wolves' lead to 2-1. Alvernia quickly went back on the attack, but a strong defensive stand from Elizabethtown forced the Golden Wolves to enter halftime with a one-goal advantage.

Coming out of halftime, the Golden Wolves shifted the momentum back in their direction when Alessandra Stevens scored in the opening minutes of the second half. Alvernia registered two more shots in the third quarter, but neither found the back of the cage. Despite allowing three shots and one penalty corner, the Golden Wolves' defense stiffened to hold a 3-1 advantage heading into the final quarter.

To begin the fourth quarter, the Blue Jays once again cut the Golden Wolves' lead to 3-2. However, in the 55th minute, Caroline Martin found the back of the cage for her fifth goal of the season. Two minutes later, a penalty stroke allowed Schaffer to score her second goal of the game and give Alvernia the 5-2 victory.
