Reading, Pa. (September 23) - On Wednesday evening, the Alvernia University women's volleyball team (5-2) won its first conference game of the season and its first win over York College (2-8) in program history. The Golden Wolves took down the Spartans 3-2 (25-21, 21-25, 25-18, 23-25, 15-9) in a thrilling five-set conference dual.

The Golden Wolves opened the first set scorching hot, outscoring the Spartans 11-2. Alvernia took advantage of nine Spartan errors and got points from Caroline Buggy and Casey Treude. York came storming back with a 13-4 run of its own to tie the set at 15-15. However, multiple Spartan errors and a kill from Olivia Jones gave the Golden Wolves a 23-18 advantage. Despite three straight points from York, an attack error and a kill from Allison Wolf gave Alvernia the 25-21 set-one win.

Both teams exchanged points early in set two, with the Spartans edging out to an 11-8 lead. Another competitive stretch from both squads saw York leading 17-15 at the midway point. Despite points from Treude, Julia Lassandro, and Jones, the Spartans managed to squeak out the 25-21 set-two win.

Heading into the third set all square, the Spartans jumped out to a 10-5 lead. However, after a big 12-5 run from the Golden Wolves, led by Zoe Velez, Wolf, Lassandro, and Olivia Rohrbaugh, Alvernia regained a 17-15 advantage. The Golden Wolves would close out the set on an 8-3 run to take a 2-1 set lead.

Wolf, Velez, and Treude kept the offense going in the fourth set, but the Spartans were in lockstep, trailing only 10-9. Following a couple of Golden Wolves errors, the Spartans cut the lead to 16-13, forcing an Alvernia timeout. A shift in momentum swung in the direction of the Spartans, who used a 9-3 run to recapture a 21-19 lead. After a quick 4-1 run from Alvernia following a Spartan timeout, York would close out the set 25-23 with the final three points to force a fifth set.

All tied at two sets apiece, the Golden Wolves, behind three kills from Treude, gave Alvernia a 7-3 advantage. The Spartans continued to battle, but Wolf and Treude had the answers late, extending the lead to 10-5. Back-to-back Wolf kills and a Spartan error provided Alvernia more room, now leading 13-5. Despite a small run from York, Jones and Wolf capped off the five-set thriller with a 15-9 victory.
