Golden Wolves Fall to #16 Royals, 2-1

Scranton, Pa. (September 30, 2026) - Alvernia University (4-4-1) netted an 80th minute goal to make it a one goal game but it was not enough as the #16 University of Scranton (5-1-3) defeated the Golden Wolves, 2-1, Wednesday night in a non-conference men's soccer clash at Scranton's Weiss Field. 

After a scoreless first half, the Royals took the 2-0 lead after two goals from Drew Paxson in the 48th and 70th minutes. The Golden Wolves pulled one back when Brendan Corpus put the ball into the back of the net with ten minutes to go but it was not enough as the Royals secured the 2-1 victory over the Golden Wolves. 

How it Happened 
  • The Royals highlighted a scoreless first half with six shots to Alvernia's one but Scranton only sent one shot on goal as the game headed to the halftime break tied at zero. 
  • Scranton broke the scoreless tie just under three minutes into the second half when Alex Kozdron assisted Drew Paxson to put the Royals up 1-0. 
  • The Royals added to their lead in the 70th minute when Kozdron and Paxson connected again for a Scranton goal to make it a 2-0 game with 20 minutes to go. 
  • The Golden Wolves pulled within one ten minutes later in the 80th minute when Ben Macchione connected with Brendan Corpus who put the ball in the back of the net to make it a 2-1 game with ten minutes to go in the game. 
  • Alvernia were not able to find an equalizer in the final ten minutes of the contest as the 16th ranked Royals secured the 2-1 victory over the Golden Wolves. 

Inside the Box Score 
  • Brendan Corpus netted the lone goal for the Golden Wolves, his third of the year. 
  • Ben Macchione dished out the assist on the Corpus goal which came as his first collegiate point. 
  • Andrew Etkin tallied five saves in net for the Golden Wolves. 

Up Next 
  • The Golden Wolves are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Hood College to take on the Blazers in their MAC Commonwealth opener at 1:00 PM.
