Ava Michael and Men's Soccer sophomore
Chase Malone both earned Alvernia Athlete of the Week honors for their performances on the field during the week of September 1st-6th. This week's Alvernia Athletes of the Week are presented by MailShark.
Michael, a senior forward, led the Golden Wolves to a 1-1 opening week with five total points. Michael netted the game tying goal in the 53rd minute in a 2-1 OT setback to Gettysburg on Tuesday and finished with three total shots, two of which went on goal. Michael then powered the Golden Wolves to a 2-0 victory on the road at Susquehanna with a goal and an assist. Michael broke the scoreless tie in the first three minutes of the game to put the Golden Wolves up 1-0. Michael then assisted teammate Alessandra Stevens with an insurance goal early in the third quarter to lead the Golden Wolves to the two goal victory over Susquehanna. The victory came as Head Coach Cody Savitsky's first of her career and also the first victory over Susquehanna since September of 2008.
Malone, a sophomore forward, helped lead Alvernia to a 2-1 week in its first week of competition and netted two game winning goals on the weekend. Malone helped the Golden Wolves secure the weekend double over Penn State Berks and Lancaster Bible College. In a 3-1 victory over Penn State Berks, Malone netted the game winning goal after teammate Chase Lankelis connected with Malone with a cross into the box, Malone then headed it into the back of the net to give the Golden Wolves the 2-1 advantage in a game they would go onto win 3-1. Then, in a 3-0 victory over Lancaster Bible College on Sunday, Malone broke the scoreless tie in the 61st minute when he found the back of the net yet again to give the Golden Wolves a 1-0 lead in the second half. Malone's goal would prove to be the game winner as the Golden Wolves tacked on two insurance goals later in the second half to secure the 3-0 shutout victory and post a 2-1 record on the opening week of competition. Malone finished the week with five total shots, three shots on goal and 152 total minutes played.
Alvernia Field Hockey is back in action this week on Wednesday when they host Wilkes at 7:00 PM for their home opener. Men's Soccer also is back in action on Wednesday and travel to Penn State Harrisburg to take on the Lions at 4:00 PM.
