BOX SCORE
St. Thomas, USVI (Dec. 30, 2007) – Senior guard
Jill Rosolie (Quarryville, Pa./Solanco) hit 11-of-12 free throws to fuel a season-high 19 points as Alvernia College dropped the consolation game of the 2007 Sunsational Hoops Classic, 76-66, to St. Mary's College Sunday evening at Charlotte Amalie High School.
For the second time in as many nights the Crusaders (3-5) were done in by a slow start. Down 14 at the half and as many as 13 points midway through the second half, Alvernia rattled off 11 straight points capped by a
Joanna Graber (Manalapan, N.J./Notre Dame) 3 that cut the Seahawks' lead t0 60-62 with 5:12 to play.
Rosolie had a look at a 3 for the lead on the Crusaders' ensuing possession, but it rimmed out and the Seahawks scored 14 of the next 18 to push the lead back to a dozen with under a minute to play.
St. Mary's opened up a 5-0 lead early and never trailed. Alvernia freshman Tracee Harrison (Willow Street, Pa./Solanco), who finished with nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds scored back-to-back buckets to pull within one, 5-4, but four minutes later the score was 14-8. That lead grew to double-figures for the first time late in the first half. St. Mary's sophomore Steph Saint-Aubin scored nine of her game-high 28 points during the Seahawks' 13-5 run and St. Mary's settled for a 14-point lead at the break.
After surrendering the first bucket of the second half, Alvernia scored 11 of the next 13 to cut the gap to seven points, but Saint-Aubin scored eight more points during a run that pushed the lead back to 13 with 9:18 to play.
Freshman reserve Kayla Colon (Columbia, Pa./Columbia) scored two minutes later to start Alvernia's late run, but the Crusaders couldn't finish the comeback.
Alvernia is off for the New Year's break and will return to action at Muhlenberg on Jan. 5.
