Penn State Squeezes By Alvernia

McKee, Horning, And Dickey Earn Singles Wins

Reading, Pa. (Sept. 6, 2007) – Penn State-Berks earned wins in three of six singles matches after taking two or three doubles points to squeeze by Alvernia College, 5-4, Thursday afternoon in non-conference women's tennis action at Berks.

The Lions (1-0) earned a pair of 8-4 victories in doubles play and then followed with wins at No. 2, 4, and 5 singles to take the narrow victory. Alvernia sophomore Janine Horning (Red Hill, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) and freshman Katie McCormack (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) won the No. 2 doubles match 8-2 and both followed with wins at No. 3 and No. 6 singles respectively. Both cruised 6-0 first their first set of singles play eventually winning in straight sets.

Freshman Jenny McKee (York, Pa./York Catholic) also earned a straight set victory with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles.

Alvernia split the Reading series this season having defeated Albright College in the season opener and will start conference play on Tuesday when it hosts Misericordia University at Angelica Park.
