Reading, Pa. (Oct. 11, 2008) - In the last match on the court Saturday afternoon freshman
Laura Ehnes (Roselle Park, Pa./Roselle Park) earned a three-set win at No. 5 singles to give Alvernia University (6-8, 3-4) and important win over King's College (8-4, 3-3) in Freedom Conference women's tennis action.
The win for the Crusaders keeps them alive for the fourth and final spot in the Freedom Conference Team Tournament to be held in late April. King's has one conference match remaining, a suspended match with Misericordia University that will be completed on Tuesday. A King's loss would put them in a three-way tie for fourth place with Alvernia and Eastern. The tiebreaker would likely come down to the matches played between the three teams and will be applied by the conference office.
King's started Saturday's match with wins at both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles with Alvernia getting an important point at No. 3 doubles.
The top three players in the Alvernia lineup cruised to straight set wins in singles play and King's won in straight sets at No. 4 and No. 6 tying the match at 4-4 with just the No. 5 match still on the court. Ehnes had won the first set by a 6-3 count and dropped the second by the same score. She went down 4-1 in the third set, but bounced back for a 7-5 win with everyone's attention on her match.
