Swarthmore, Pa. (Nov. 23, 2008) - For the second time this season sophomore forward Alex Velazquez (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) scored a career-high points and three players passed 20 points leading Alvernia University (3-2) to a 94-85 win over Swarthmore College (0-2) in the Garnet Tide Tip-Off Tournament Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore Kelli McIntyre (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain) scored 23 points and Lil Snyder (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter Strasburg) scored a career-high 21 points. Swarthmore had three players reached double figures led by Kathryn Stockbower who went for 18. Stockbower and Velazquez represented their respective teams on the All-Tournament Team.
Velaquez scored 18 points in the first half and McIntyre and Snyder accounted for 14 points each in the opening 20 minutes as Alvernia ran out to a 56-38 lead at the break.
Swarthmore actually led by as many as nine points in the early going with a 13-4 lead five minutes into the game. Snyder hit a pair of 3s and a jumper as the Crusaders came back to knot the score at 18-all. McIntyre led the way in the later stages of the half hitting three 3s in the final five minutes helping Alvernia close the half on a 23-9 run that turned a slim four-point edge into a commanding 18-point lead at the break.
The lead ballooned to 20 points, 59-39 on a three-point play by McIntyre and the nine-point final was the only time the lead was under 10 in the second half.
Alvernia is off for the holiday and will return to action hosting its first Freedom Conference game as part of a women's and men's doubleheader against Delaware Valley on Dec. 3.
