Friday April 11, 2008 (Reading, PA) - Alvernia swept Roseont College this afternoon in conference action to improve to 20-6, 8-2 in the PAC. Junior
Megan Sowders (Atco, NJ/Hammonton) earned her first win of the season after pitching the final three innings in game one.
Ashley Leonhard (Bernville, PA/Tulpehocken) improved to 2-1 on the season after throwing four scoreless innings in the second game.
In game one the Crusaders got down to business early putting up five runs in the first inning after the first six batters up were walked. They added four more in the second inning highlighted by a three-run homerun from
Michele Kassab (Pompton Lakes, NJ/Pompton Lakes). Rosemont's woes on the pitching mound continued as eight Crusaders were walked, allowing Alvernia to score another nine runs in the third inning. Leonhard stroked a triple in the fourth inning to help push across another two runs and Sowders would shut down the Rambler offense in the top of the fifth for th 20-1 win.
Megan McCafferty (Millville, NJ/Millville) was 3-for-3 in the first game with two runs scored and an RBI.
The second game saw Alvernia once score five runs in the first inning thanks to five hits and a walk. Nine more crossed the plate in the second inning and four in the third for the 18 run total. Starting pitcher Leonhard held the Ramblers hitless until an infield single from Katelyn Rogers in the fourth inning.
Sara Kilby (Crofton, ND/Arundel) came in to shut down Rosemont in the fifth and secure the sweep.
In the second game
Beth Jablonowski (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and
Janelle Lynch (Macungie, PA/Brandywine) was 2-for-3 with four runs scored.
Alvernia will take on Gwynedd-Mercy tomorrow in a PAC doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm.
