Golden Wolves Sweep Spartans, Secure MAC Commonwealth Playoff Bid

Reading, Pa (April 27, 2025) - Alvernia University (23-15, 7-7) recorded two massive senior day wins over York College (13-23, 7-7) Saturday afternoon in a MAC Commonwealth softball doubleheader down in Angelica Park.

The series sweep put the Golden Wolves at 7-7 in Commonwealth play and held the tiebreaker over York with the sweep. Stevenson dropped both games of its doubleheader to Eastern and slid Alvernia into the #4 spot in the conference standings to give them a playoff bid.

The Golden Wolves took game one by a score of 6-3 after a four spot in the bottom of the sixth inning to secure the 6-3 victory. Alvernia then grabbed game two, 7-5, on the shoulders of Kelsey Racine who shut the Spartans out in the final four innings to secure the victory and the sweep.

How it Happened
  • York jumped ahead early in game one of the doubleheader with two runs in the first inning to grab a 2-0 lead.
  • The Golden Wolves responded in the third inning with two runs to level the score at two. Brooke Hauck singled up the middle to score Alexia Fitzgerald to cut the York lead to one, 2-1. Angelina Sponheimer then stepped up and singled up the middle as well to score Hauck and tie the game at two.
  • The Spartans responded in the next half inning with a sacrifice fly to left center that was deep enough to score a run and grab the 3-2 lead.
  • The Golden Wolves bounced back with a four run sixth inning to swing the lead in favor of Alvernia, 6-3. Summer Montgomery sparked things with a RBI single up the middle to tie the game at three. The Golden Wolves grabbed the lead thanks to a York error that allowed a run to score and then tacked on two more after yet another York error let two runs score and pushed the lead to 6-3 Alvernia.
  • Kelsey Racine got out of a jam in the top of the seventh to secure the 6-3 victory in game one.

How it Happened
  • The Spartans grabbed the lead in the top of the first again in game two with another two spot.
  • The Golden Wolves responded in the home half of the first and halved the deficit thanks to a Brooke Hauck single into the right center gap to make it 2-1.
  • York extended its lead to three in the second inning after a single scored a run and an Alvernia error allowed a second run to score and pushed it to a 4-1 ballgame.
  • Alvernia bounced right back in the bottom of the inning with four runs to swing the lead in its favor, 5-4. Mady Polonsky started things off with a single and then scored via a wild pitch later in the inning. Summer Montgomery singled up the middle and scored Payton Splain and Alexia Fitzgerald to level the score at four a piece. Montgomery then scored on another York wild pitch to grab the 5-4 lead and cap the four run inning.
  • The Spartans responded right away in the next half inning with an RBI double into the left center alley to tie it up at five.
  • The Golden Wolves regained the lead in the home half of the fifth inning thanks to a Fitzgerald RBI double over the head of the left fielder to make it 6-5. Fitzgerald then came around to score after Brooke Hauck singled to center field to put the Golden Wolves up two, 7-5.
  • Kelsey Racine continued to shut down the Spartan batting order in the final two innings. Racine did not allow a hit and issued just one walk in the final two frames to secure the victory and the sweep for the Golden Wolves.
