Crusaders Top Wesley 10-0 and 12-2 For The Sweep

Freshman Michelle Jensen Throws A One-Hitter In Game One To Improve To 7-2

Wednesday April 2, 2008 (Dover, De.) – The Crusaders swept Wesley College this afternoon 10-0 and 12-2 in non-conference action at Wesley College. Michelle Jensen (Holland, NJ/Delaware Valley) threw a one-hitter in the first game to improve to 7-2 and Emily Williams (Minersville, PA/Nativity) earned the win in the second game scattering eight hits and two runs over seven innings.

Alvernia got things started right away when Rhiannon Sorrentino (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) led-off with a single on the first pitch of the game and scored after three passed balls. They would add four more runs in the second inning thanks to a Wesley error and a bases loaded triple from Lauren Crimi (Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame). The third inning saw the Crusaders plate five more runs to go ahead 10-0. The inning started with two Wesley errors followed by three singles, including Sorrentino's third single of the day to score two runs.

Starter Jensen would hold Wesley at bay through the rest of the game, giving up only one hit in the bottom of the fourth inning to complete the five inning game.

Sorrentino led off the second game with yet another hit, this time a triple and came around to score on the same play due to an error by the Wesley third basemen. Michele Kassab (Pompton Lakes, NJ/Pompton Lakes) led off the second inning with a single and scored Alvernia's second run of the game on an RBI single from Shannon Higgins (Blue Bell, PA/Wissahickan). Sorrentino connected for her second triple of the game to lead off the third inning and scored on a fielder's choice from Crimi.

The Crusaders would increase their lead to 6-0 with three more runs in the sixth inning with help from a lead-off triple from Kassab and a two-RBI double from Sorrentino.

Wesley mustered their lone two runs of the day in the bottom of the sixth inning when pitcher Jessica Morgan led off with a double and came around to score on a triple to left field from Kelly Caton. Caton would score Wesley's second run on a fielder's choice.

Alvernia capped off the day with six more runs in the seventh inning to put the game away. Williams led off the inning with a double which was quickly followed by a single from Kassab and an RBI single from catcher Samantha Geisinger (Thurmont, MD/Catoctin). Higgins stepped up with a double up the middle to score two more and Sorrentino capped off the scoring for the day with a three-RBI triple.

Alvernia will travel to Arcadia University tomorrow afternoon for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 3:00 pm.
