(April 25, 2009) - The Crusaders (15-20, 4-12 Freedom) scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning in game two to defeat Wilkes University (18-20, 10-6 Freedom) 7-3 and come away with the split this afternoon in Freedom Conference action after Wilkes downed Alvernia 6-2 in the first game of the day. Lauren Crimi (Nazareth, Pa./Notre Dame) was honored after the game as Avernia's lone senior. With just a 4-12 record in the Freedom Conference Alvernia will not be advancing into the conference playoffs and concluded their 2009 season this afternoon.
In the first game of the day Wilkes followed a Crusaders error with a walk and three hits to take the early 4-0 lead on four unearned runs. Alvernia would answer with one of their own in the bottom of first inning after
Janelle Lynch (Macungie, Pa./Brandywine) would come around to score on a fielder's choice after she led off the inning with a single and a stolen base. Wilkes added a run in the fourth inning, and their first earned run of the day in the fifth inning for the 6-1 lead. The Crusaders managed just one more run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a double from
Samantha Geisinger (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin).
The second game of the day saw Wilkes again jump out to the early lead, this time plating two runs in the first inning. Alvernia brought the game withing one run in the third inning after an RBI single from senior Crimi scored Lynch from second base. The Crusaders would go ahead 3-2 in the fourth inning thanks to a two-out, two-RBI double from
Rhiannon Sorrentino (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall).
The Crusaders would tag on four insurance runs in the sixth inning thanks to four hits, three stolen bases and a Wilkes error.
Lynch was 3-for-6 on the day with four runs scored and four stolen bases. Lynch ends the regular season leading the team in batting and leading the conference with 26 stolen bases. Crimi closed her career with a 3-for-6 performance including a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Sophomore pitcher
Michelle Jensen (New Holland, NJ/Delaware Valley) again threw all 14 innings for the Crusaders allowing just three earned runs.
