Reading, Pa. (Nov. 20, 2010) - Former Alvernia University standout Zach Lutz has been added to the 40-man roster of the New York Mets.

Lutz, a fifth round selection of the Mets in the '07 first-year player draft, spent most of the 2010 season with the Mets' Class AA affiliate in Binghamton, and finished the season playing in the last six games for AAA Buffalo.  With the Bison Lutz went 6-for-20 with four doubles, a homer, and nine RBIs.

Lutz was added to the 40-man roster along with Minor League infielder Jordany Valdespin and pitchers Armando Rodriguez and Josh Stinson in order to be protected during the Rule 5 draft in December.  In the major league baseball Rule 5 draft, teams are permitted to select players from other organizations who were either drafted before turning 19 and have played five years professionally, or drafted after 19 and have played four years -- unless that player is listed on the 40-man.

The Mets organization clearly sees a future for Lutz, but admits his path to New York is hindered by All-Star third baseman David Wright.

Former Alvernia cather Anthony Recker, a three-time Minor League All-Star, spent most of the 2010 season with the Sacramento River Cats, the Class AAA affiliate of the Oakland A's.  He batted .288 with 18 doubles and 10 homers with the River Cats.
