Reading, Pa. (Dec. 15, 2010) - Freshman
Shanaye Glenn (Coatesville, Pa./The Hill School) scored 13 of her game-high 21 points in the second half and Alvernia University (4-4) posted a 78-47 win over Eastern University (4-4) Wednesday evening in non-conference women's basketball action at the Physical Education Center.
Alvernia forced 41 turnovers and held the Eagles to 16 points on 4-of-20 shooting in the first half.
“We're a very, very good perimeter defensive team this year,” said Alvernia head coach
Kevin Calabria after picking up career win number 394. “That's what we're stressing. We have to be a tremendous defensive team, and I think we have the athletes to do that.”
The Crusaders held the Eagles off the board for a five-plus minute stretch in the first half and
Julie Hahn (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) knocked down a pair of 3s to help the hosts push a two-point lead to 16 with a 14-0 run. Hahn finished with seven points, four assists, and two steals.
The Eagles helped the run by turning the ball over 11 times. They gave it up 22 times in the first half. They also went 0-for-6 from the floor while the Crusaders went 6-for-10 from the floor to build the lead.
Alvernia held a 29-16 lead at the halftime break. Glenn led the way with eight points on 4-of-7 shooting, then came out in the second and hit 6-of-8 to reach her game-high 21.
“
Shanaye Glenn played a very sound second half,” said Calabria. “She really came to play today. I challenged her. I wanted her to guard Shante Jones [a Division I transfer for the Eagles]. I wanted to see how she would react to that and I think she did a great job. Defensively is where I think Shanaye can be a star.”
As the main defender against Jones, Glenn held the Eagles' leading scorer to four points on 1-of-9 shooting. Jones also had five turnovers and played just 17 minutes, all in the first half. Glenn also posted team highs with seven steals and six assists.
Alvernia's second half lead was as high as 33 at one point. Fifteen players saw at least three minutes of action on the floor for the Crusaders. Senior
Lil Snyder (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter Strasburg) joined Glenn in double figures with 10 points.
Brittany Young (Columbus, N.J./North Burlington), who was fighting illness, had her streak of seven straight games in double figures snapped. She finished with six points in just 16 minutes.
Alvernia is off for the holiday break and will return to action hosting Neumann College on January 3.
