BOX SCORE
Reading, Pa. (Dec. 3, 2010) – Lebanon Valley College (7-1, 2-0) used a 9-2 second-half run to open up a 13-point lead en route to a 66-53 win over Alvernia University (3-4, 1-1) Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference women's basketball action at the Physical Education Center.
“Lebanon Valley was good today,” said Alvernia head coach
Kevin Calabria. “They gave us a sound beating.”
Leading by six with 16:41 still left to play, the Dutchmen scored six of the next seven to push the lead to 11 and Lauren Ruhl knocked down one of her three 3s that capped the run to give LVC a 51-38 lead with 11:33 to play.
Alvernia was able to cut the lead to nine on one occasion, but LVC responded and kept the lead in double figures the rest of the way.
“We played hard today,” said Calabria. “They took away our big kids, but I didn't think we did a good job of trying to get it in to them.”
Alvernia post players
Allie Toczylowski (Mantua, N.J./Clearview Regional) and
Angela Altemose (Pottsville, Pa./Nativity BVM) entered Saturday both with back-to-back double-doubles, but either reached double figures scoring.
LVC got a game-high 14 points from Renee Fritz, 13 rom Ruhl, and 10 from Suzie Noyes. A pair of Alvernia freshmen reached double figures.
Shanaye Glenn (Coatesville, Pa./The Hill School) led with 13 points and
Brittany Young (Columbus, N.J./North Bulrlington) passed 10 points for the seventh time this season with a dozen.
The Dutchmen scored the first six points of the game, but after reaching eight points, and an 8-4 lead, the Crusaders held them off the board for the next five-plus minutes while the hosts started a 13-2 run that spanned seven minutes and left Alvernia up 17-10.
Ruhl hit a 3 to end the run and the Dutchmen offense needed less than two minutes to retake the lead and Ruhl's jumper with 6:22 left in the half put them back up six, 24-18.
The lead was eight with 2:28 on the clock and four free throws for Alvernia to a pair for LVC sent the guests to the locker room with a 34-28 halftime lead.
LVC sophomore Renee Fritz, who seemed to score all of her points on short bank shots, and Young led all players with eight at the break. Altemose had six points and six boards.
Alvernia is off for finals week and will return to action on the 15th hosting Eastern University for a non-conference game.
